I have no use for a GPS, therefore I don't have one. I also trust the old map and compass more...

I'm running a Magellan Meridian. That said, I also have a Cammenga US issue lensatic compass, and know how to use it...

The GPS does some things that are more difficult or impossible with a map & compass, like determing instantaneous speed accurately (my motorcycle speedometer turned out to be 20 mph optimistic at the top of the range), and easily creating goto routes and backtrack logs. The GPS will also tell you where you are, even if you screwed up with the compass and are lost

I have the Garmin Etrex Vista. Paid a little more than the Legend and other (not necessarily) lesser models. I appreciate the extra functions that it has. One thing though, I wish the computer chip processor was faster. After I download a map from the CD's it takes some time to upload all that information on the screen...

But, don't get me wrong...I believe Map and Compass should always be brought with you where ever you might be headed in the back country. These are my primary navigation tools. Sometimes, it is nice to be able to find yourself on the GPS. Orienteering has been a wonderful recreational activity for me. Oh, one other thing, if you opt to get a GPS, make sure to go 'geocaching'!! Great fun. Kinda like doing a little scavenger hunt when you are hiking!

Since I've got my E-trex, I can't imagine being without it ! It's so easy to operate and hunting new areas is now MUCH easier!! I still carry a compass with me though ( just in case )

Hey Java! Well, thanks for the compliments.. *heh-heh!* Well, I find the GPS as a useful navigational tool. Especially when you get off an airplane in Denver and wanted to get to Spyderland. All I need to do, is create a route and follow the exact waypoint to hotels, gas stations, restaurants and the location of the SFO as well as Spyderco's headquarters.. And yeah, the map and compass is useful as well..

I have a Garmin eTrex Legend that I hookup to my PDA (iPaq 5455) which runs Routis mapping and routing software. I can toss the Garmin on the dashboard and use the PDA to view maps and listen to turn-by-turn directions. Great for the travelling crowd such as myself.
