Lets help name the new in-house blade coating.
Lets help name the new in-house blade coating.
How about.
SPY-Slick
SPY-Glide
SPY- FOLLOWED by Greek letter \(\mu \) (mu), that quantifies the resistance to sliding between two surfaces in contact, calculated as the ratio of the frictional force (\(F\)) to the normal force (\(N\)).
SPY-11 or SPY11 As this is the number of the fastest race car?
SPY-50 As in 50 years in the making.
Those are my top 5 What do you have?

Why can’t we just call it what the company calls it?….. They have been working on it for a while so I am sure they refer to it internally by a name or some nomenclature. And, since it is their baby, shouldn’t they have the honor of naming it?

Re: Lets help name the new in-house blade coating.
Sal mentioned the in-house coating would be first used on pocket clips. One of my (few) pet peeves with Spyderco has been the impermanence of the previous black clip coating. I'd like to order some replacement clips, once most of their replacement clips in stock have the new coating.
It's too trivial a thing to go bothering someone about what coating process was used on the specific clip I'm ordering. I'd order some now, but it's not clear where they are in the changeover. If they have substantial old stock in their replacement clip drawers, it could be years. It's strange what small details I can get obsessive over.
I suppose they can do custom colors. If they decide to match coatings with blade steels and handle materials, there would be quite an assortment, so to keep this post "in the spirit", I suggest "Spyderweb", after the rainbow of colors in spiderwebs after rainfall.

Well I am going to agree and disagree with you there while I am perfectly fine with the Spyderco clip I too dislike the easily scratched paint it would be better to tumble them than paint them black.
I would take all those painted clips and toss them in the hopper and stonewash them is how I would deal with what exists.
When I see the aftermarket for clips that tells me Spyderco is missing a market and it is one they created.
Why give away what they could sell? I dont get this at all so it is no trivial thing.
Speaking of the new Coating Jeff at CS told me over the phone there next drop of PM2 will be the first to have the new coating sometime this year.

I think ZrN is the working name as is. (Zirconium Nitride)
Since it is a zirconium coating, how about Zircoatium?
Maybe Zircoat?
I think another acronym would be fine too.
Z-PVD? (Zirconium Physical Vapor Deposition)
ZBC? (Zirconium Based Coating)
