Okay, Spydie and other knives over the last

15yrs ( just for a measure, to see when

became your "knife of choice" )

I started with things like Kissing crane stillettoes, some auto kits I got from the now defunct Edge Company, then on to a Blackjack ( they're gone too!) Highland dirk I ( later a II ) My first Spydie was the Dragonfly ( I was on un-employment at the time ) as the Ladybug was difficult to manipulate with my long fingers ( I later mastered the Ladybug ) then an almite SE

Cricket, then a C21SBK Merlin ( no longer in production ; it had the old FRN handle with the clip molded on )

Then, all **** broke loose....

SE FRN Cricket, another Merlin ( C08SBK ),

Centofante Vesuvius, MeerKat 440C PE (what!?!)....

And so it went.

What say the augurers?

Hi Allen-

Man that makes a person think way back....

I started with a buck 110 and a browning both folders. Than one day at the fair they had this new knive out called spyderco. I watched the guys demo. and just had to have one. They were way different than anything else but I was hooked. I think it was called the Hunter..not real sure. Than not long after that had to have the sharpmaker. I really like all knives but the clip and the hole got me hooked. The demo was cutting free hanging hemp rope with a se.

I guess "the proof is in the performance"
with Cold Steel AOBTW uses that same test!

How 'bout that episode of "MacGyver" where a bullet was stopped by his every trusty SAK?

Used to just carry SAK's. Picked up a Buck 360,then a SwissTool and those got me into multis. Didn't really carry a regular knife until I got my BM 830 and went on my deployment. Picked up a few more knives, then got into Spydies and went nuts. Got my first Photons in '99 and that got me into lights.

Well if we can only go back a mere 15 years, then it would be a Buck 501 up to about seven months ago, and an ever increasing assortment of Spydercos since then. Going back further, the Buck, purchased in '78, replaced a well worn Case Whaler that had been in my pocket since around '60.

The Buck did get "laid off" for around 5 years back in the late '80s and early '90s when I worked in a prison. We were only allowed sub 2" blades there, so a Schrade LB1 on my keyring replaced it. That got me into the habit of having a knife on my keyring. Noticed about a month or so ago that the brass bail on the LB1 had gotten paper thin, so it was retired and replaced by a burgundy micarta Jester.

In my childhood years, it was old military bayonets that would accompany me on my forays into the wilderness.

In the 1980's, I discovered Cold Steel knives.

In the '90s, it was Benchmade.

Last year, I finally ordered a Spyderco. I'd had my eye on the Native for a few years after seeing an article about them in Tactical Knives.

And then there was the Dodo...
And then the Striders.
So many knives...so little money! :-)

Aloha! As for me, I bought some Frost cutlery stuff from my friend "KO" of Kershaw fame in '91. I was very fond of this little folder with bone scales...About the size of a D'fly with a little lanyard ring on the back. I later bought an Endura that I returned to get a BM Tsunami...but after handling the Endura, I went back and "re-bought" it, as the Tsunami failed to meet the features of the Endura, something I didn't realize until after I handled them both. I got hooked after that! Prior to '91, I carried butterfly knives and boot knives...even "shuriken"! LOL! (you see, the ninja craze was in full swing back then!)thank God I was never "caught" carrying such things! I was obviously knife uneducated then, but I consider myself educated now as I do use Spyders!

God will put you over...if you let Him!

It all started with a $3 fake-SAK when I was about ten years old. My parents gave it me, cause I was a boyscout. A few years later I bought a red Victorinox Hunter (one of the first Victorinox with a locking blade) in Germany. This one was followed with an army green fixed blade and a another locking Victorinox.
Then in the summer of 2001 I bought my first Spyderco: a PE SpydeRench, cause I wanted a multitool as EDC. Since then it is rotation with a CoPilot SE, a Meerkat reverse-S PE and (for a short while) a CRKT KISS as EDC. In a week a expect a CF Delica PE and a d'Allara, both are meant to be EDC, especially the Delica.

Well, let's see here...I still have the Victorinox Swiss Army that I bought when I was 14...Then I carried a Buck folder given to me by a friend after I graduated from EMT school about 18 years ago (carried that one as my duty knife until I got the Spyderco Rescue this year--the Buck is in storage). WAY back I remember a pocketknife from my grandfather when I was 8 or 9 years old (no idea what happened to it). I also have a military survival knife that I've had since high school and carry with my survival gear. I think that's about it.

For years, it was a Buck 110 Folding Hunter all the time, and a Buck Special when I was working (as a Forester) outdoors.

Spyderco has replaced the Buck knives nowadays.

Started with a cheap SAK knock-off for my B-day when I was ten. Went to Gerbers for a while. Got a Buck M-9 bayonnet and that has saved my bacon more times than I care to remember. Got a BM then a couple Spydies. Al Mar, MOD MT, Cuda, more SAKS(real ones) but in the last few years Spyderco has taken over and I find myself trading some of the others to acquire more Spydies. Good Q Allen, we can't all just own Spydies. Take Care!!!

I never carried a knife before I discovered Spydies...... I have, however, carried a Leatherman on me since the early 90's(PST, SuperTool, Wave, SuperTool 200).

I used old surplus machetes growing up on the farm along with various hunting knives. My dad and I started a "collection" when I was in elementary school that is made up of everything from Buck to Case, to Marbles. The first one that was "mine" was a little Buck 303 (I still carry it sometimes).

Some time around Jr. High, my dad gave me a cheap butterfly - I had a short and painful affair with it. Incidentally, how many of you remember the days when you could take a knife to school? Everyone always had one. We whittled, sharpened pencils, cleaned our nails, sliced fruit, and cut the lunch room mystery meat - ahh... those were the good old days before metal detectors & zero tolerance.

At some point, I bought a Gerber Bolt Action folder and carried it on and off until after I got out of college.

Then I bought a BM 970 and that was all she wrote. I traveled around a good bit, and it was my constant companion until their Stryker came out. I now (according to my wife) own "too many" knives.

Nearly all of them get carried at some point or another. But the ones in heavy rotation include:
BM 940, CRKT M1, Emerson SOFCK, and on special occasions, my custom Elishewitz Striker. I just bought a Lil Temperance (believe it or not, my first Spyderco) and it is the knife that I am carrying the most. What a great knife.

I ALWAYS have a Leatherman Micra on my keychain (along with an inova light). A Cold Steel SRK rides in my trunk for any special occasion.

Incidentally, my wife keeps a Blackie Colllins designed S&W rescue knife in her car. It has a nasty serrated blade and a glass breaker. She's a doc and has the uncanny ability of stumbling on auto accidents.

Sorry for the length, but you asked 8-)
