Wootz?

#1

Post by BeggarSo »

Did Spyderco ever make a Wootz damascus steel knife?

I was wondering because I am in the market for one and am not really impressed with the thought of what is essentialy a san mai knife where it is just VG10 at the edge.

Not because of appearance but I would like to experience the feel of cutting with one and expect the Japanese versions to be little different from a regular ol VG10 blade.

Maybe I am wrong? Please educate me.

The main issue is that Wootz is not produced on an industrial scale like the steels Spyderco typically uses. Spyderco has used custom damascus once in the past, but purely as decorative bolsters on their 25th anniversary knife. I also doubt whatever Wootz could be procured in large amounts would have properties that would make it stand out from the high quality steels Spyderco already uses.

Have you considered trying one of the Damasteel models? FB01PGYD, C255CFPD and C127GPIVD are currently on sale. That would probably give you a similar experience to Wootz, although I don't think you will notice a difference between any damascus vs monosteel without scientific testing.

Thank you for the reply and examples of what is out there.

I once handled a Chris Reeve sebenza with a ladder pattern damascus blade and it was sticky sharp, I remember being impressed with it, but I am really at heart a Spyderco guy more than any other brand.

If one of these was in a Stretch2XL it would be an Instabuy. Not much for fixed blades as I rarely if ever have a need outside the kitchen.

I tend to gravitate to blades that are in the mid 3inches to 4 inch range for folders.

The Urban Slipit is an eyecatcher though.

Short answer

Ancient steels are not superior to modern PM steels in a practical sense. The legendary quality of Wootz is based on comparison to other ancient steels.

Interesting read for sure, thank you. What have you guys observed to be the best steel for sticky sharpness so far K390 is pretty darn impressive. I know sharpening has alot to do with it but so does the steel.
