New Mule Team Scale and Sheath Vendor

#1

Post by SpyderPhreak »

This was posted over on Blade Forums, but I thought it might be worth cross posting here too.

A new vendor is making MT scales and sheaths, and they're pretty sweet. I don't know if I can mention them here or not, but the company name is StonerCNC. I won't go as far as to link them, but shouldn't be too hard to find.

I really like the tank tread milling on the orange one! I’ll be ordering all my future grips this way if possible.

Here with a couple other mules, both Halpern grips. The black being factory Spyderco black textured, the others I bought directly from Halpern some years ago, and hand-smoothed them myself. Have some blue/black hand-smoothed ones kicking around somewhere too.

Here are a couple spine shots to try and convey the different contouring. First pic is centered between the middle two knives. Second pic is centered between the right two knives, trying to capture the difference between the Halpern (black) and the Stoner (orange).

The Halpern scales are only contoured longitudinally, from edge to spine, in an oval cross-section. From tip to butt, they have a perfectly flat profile. They’re much thinner at the edge and spine, and fuller in the middle.

However, the Stoner grips are sort of opposite. From edge to spine, they’re pretty square (with rounded corners), with only mild longitudinal contouring, which makes them more hand filling. This makes them thicker along the spine where you generally put the most pressure when pushing the edge through something. Having large hands, I really like this! They have some mild contouring from tip to butt, with a palm swell in the middle. The thinnest part is where the screws go through the scales.

One other nice little detail, a hidden lanyard cutout at the butt:

Finally, the sheaths…

Another home run! I’ve never seen a machined Kydex sheath so well executed! :+1: :+1: :+1: Retention is great! And it is a svelte pancake, very slim and trim. Nothing extra here! :cheap-sunglasses

Overall, I am VERY impressed! I’ll definitely be ordering more of these in the future. :bug-red :respect

No, it does not. Would you have assumed it did?

The scales look nothing alike, they have a completely different cross-sectional geometry, as noted in my post. That is why StonerCNC makes their own sheaths to go with their scales.
