The gimping on the choil and the thinner blade stock turn the lil native from a knife i wish i could like to a knife i love!
BD1N is… fine, but I’d love to see this thing in SPY27 or even magnacut!

It's so good. I'm selling my G10 Lil Native that does get a ton of use, but I can't get enough of the LW.
I don't even mind the steel so much, I just wish there were other FRN color options
. Salt yellow, Spy27 Blue, whatever! Black handle knives are so boring to me.

I'd love a Native 5 with Chaparral blade thickness.

Just a little bit in ergonomics. I kinda prefer the Native but I'll still be checking out the Chap XL.

Yup. How I wish the first release had been. Hoping we see that M4 DLC from BHQ sooner than later.
Re: Lil Native LW… so much better than the normal lil native. Wish there was a spy27 or MC
Nah, the regular G10 Lil Natives are plenty safe in my rotation.
I’ll still keep up with the lightweights for my collection but any future variants need to omit the tumbled blade finish. It’s awful. My thumb slips out of the thumb hole on this knife more than any Spyderco I’ve ever owned.
If it didn’t take three actual years to deliver this model, I’d suggest some CQI to get rid of the tumbled finish but I’m afraid of how long that might take.
Also they added jimping to the LW model for some weird reason, which was unnecessary. All it did was make it ten times easier to develop a hotspot during extended use.

Re: Lil Native LW… so much better than the normal lil native. Wish there was a spy27 or MC
I prefer handling one of my Lil Natives to handling my Chaparral; it's just more comfortable. However, the Lil Native blade works fine, but Chaparral blade is spectacular!
So, yes. A Lil Native LW is on my list, but I might hold out for a steel I like better. BD1N is fine. I gave my brother a Manix 2 LW to abuse. He has done a great job abusing it, and the knife has held up fine for the past few years of hard use. But...I really like SPY27 as a nicely balanced steel...SPY27 and 14C28N are my two favorite steels to sharpen. Or Magnacut...how about a Lil Native Salt?

To be honest, I think most folks here don't quite push steels like BD1N, or even 8Cr13MoV to thin enough geometries to see how great they can perform. Thin it to win it.
Glad to see this knife finally getting released into the wild, and I'm looking forward to receiving one and seeing how capable it is as an EDC knife. Ain't trippin' one bit about BD1N. You'd have to hit the top of the pack of super steels for much of a real difference to start to take effect over the mid tier super steels being asked for as a replacement for BD1N, IMO & IME. Geometry is the key.

I haven't been this excited about a new release in years. Considering it will be my primary edc around the house while I give the Manbug I've used every day for the past 4 years or so, a break.
I agree Weeping! BD1N was the first steel I was ever able to sharpen and tree top a hair. Haven't been too many since either! I'm fine with an easy to work with steel, a quick 3 minutes on the stones once a week or so and should be good to go.

I don't think I've played with BD1N before, but from what I've heard about it the choice of steel does not concern me.
Probably a good choice to keep cost down and get it in a lot of hands. And if it succeeds, there will probably be more variation down the road.
I'm already dreaming of a wharncliffe magnamax as a stainless option to compliment my wc k390 DF2.

Well, this steel is the standard for all LW Natives, big or small, so it’s no surprise. And just like with the other Natives, I’m sure SPY27 and Magnacut are on the way—but I’m getting impatient!

Recent favourites: Massad Ayoob CPM CRU-WEAR PE & SE, Yojimbo 2, Lil' Temperance 3 K390.

BD1N is only standard for the Native Chief Lightweight, and now the Lil Native Lightweight models. The Native 5 Lightweight has been S30V for years now, and was previously S35VN.
Undoubtedly we will see many steels in the LNLW platform. It only took ~2 years for the LNLW to drop in BD1N... so you may have to find a way to quell your impatience

I held the LNLW for the first time at the SFO and it is a little gem of a knife. Really enjoyed this one.
A LNLW in a slightly nicer steel will be winning hearts and minds.

I have not, though I did have a G10 model in the past. I just felt, for me what I was looking for in a small knife, that model didn't have it. Though very comfortable in hand. Slimmer blade is exactly what I was looking for. I had a compression lock model and I know I'll like the backlock better on this one as well. Thanks for the comparison photo!Red Leader wrote: ↑Tue Aug 26, 2025 3:38 pmHave you had it in your hands yet? I am also very tempted by this one.
Two things give me pause:
1. I'd like it in SPY27.
2. I'd rather it had the compression lock so it's easier to disassemble/clean/maintain.

The blade swings free on this one, which I wasn’t expecting. Deployment feels easy. I am completely neutral on both the Lil Native as a design, neutral on the backlock, and somewhat biased against BD1N ( for no important reason) and even this one was calling to me. I will be picking one up for my daughter, 100%. That and the Metro. Both were gems. The Metro is going to be spectacular in some other steels, hopefully that can happen soon.TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Tue Aug 26, 2025 4:25 pmI have not, though I did have a G10 model in the past. I need my bank account to recover from excessive buying in the past two months. But a LNLW is on top of my list. About the time I’m ready to buy, the SE version should be available.
