perennial favorite: The Spyderco Brouwer

#1

Post by cjk »

There are lots of Spyderco models that I'm a fan of. One that always makes me super happy to revisit is the Spyderco Brouwer. It's one of my favorite Spydercos ever (but admittedly, that's probably a lengthy list). I can carry it for months on end. It's about the right size for a small pocket knife, yet significantly sturdier than anything I've carried in decades past.

It's fantastic both in the pocket and in the hand. Complaints about the clip were widely exaggerated as the CQI version relocated the clip as close to the end of the knife as it could reasonably go. Plus, there are gobs of Spyderfans who simply must swap the clip on every knife they buy. Most of the negative knifetuber "reviews" were of the pre-CQI version. With the original clip, it's perfect in a fifth pocket (regardless of CQI or not).

It cuts extremely well, curiously well given how sturdy the tip is. It's a very public friendly size and has a very public friendly blade shape.

A lot of folks may see it as a small knife with a big handle. Blade to handle ratio snobs were probably not impressed. The handle is big enough for most hands and the blade is big enough for most everyday kind of jobs. It just works.

The Brouwer would make a great sprint run or knife shop exclusive. I'd really like to see someone do one in Cruwear or S90V. The G-10 front side scale could allow for different colors for shops that like to have a color and steel pattern for their exclusives. A carbon fiber S90V sprint or a Crucarta version would be epic!

This post is inspired by my first couple of knives from the company who invented the lock used by the Brouwer. I do like them, but I honestly think I'd rather have an upgraded Brouwer instead.

However, if it never comes back, I'll continue to enjoy the four Brouwers I have accumulated and they'll still be fantastic. And yes, it's quite ridiculous that I ended up with four, but none of them are going anywhere. :cheap-sunglasses

I'd buy one in either of those blade steels you mentioned, my favorite thing about this knife is the Kephart blade profile.

I totally agree! I find it an epic mystery why it didn't sell?! In fact, the Brouwer and the Manix 2 back lock, both "stealth" models flew under the radar and then disappeared. Luckily i got both.

Edit - and here's the Manix 2 back lock. I have met more than one who didn't even know it existed.. Too bad it didn't sell as well as it deserved!

The last one i did not buy out of principle because it was not made to the specs we the forum back then asked for. As first the blade shape and thickness is wrong and the fact they dropped the liners out of it as we requested the original to make a return (A well loved design that was discontinued way to soon just to make place for the Manix 2)
So the original is a totally different design and there for the Manix 2 backlock was nothing but a let down for me personally and i do Not regret not buying one that is for sure. As it would not fit my beloved Manix collection.

The Brouwer on the other hand i did wanted to give a try but as always there are limited funds and there was always another that came first on the list before that one. :grin-sweat

Always liked the Brouwer design & almost pulled the trigger on it a couple of times when it was still in production. I was a bit more strict with myself when it came to buying knives back then, unfortunately, and the Native 5 already occupied the ~3" folder spot in my modest collection. Would love to see it come back, even if it would be just a (non-retailer exclusive) Sprint.

I managed to grab one after disco while they were still available. Glad I did. Love the blade shape and size - a great sub-3 EDC.

A Cruwear sprint would be an instant buy.

i've kind of always wanted one. i just think they cost too much for what they are. i actually know a place that still has a few new brouwers just sitting in their boxes. i just can't bring myself to spend $200 on one.

While I like the Brouwer, I'm not sure if I would buy another one if the company produced a sprint or exclusive.

This is because I prefer not to use the forward choil on little big knives, and instead choose those on which I can get a full four-finger grip, such as the Delica or Mantra.

Still, the Brouwer is a classy design and I'm sure that it could sell well given the right combination of steel and handle materials. My personal choice would be S90V and marbled carbon fiber for an exclusive or sprint.

Say some vendor was pondering a Brouwer exclusive.... What would you want to see?

Just a deeper carry clip, for my part. I find the blade shape and ergos excellent, it just rides a tad high in my pocket. A nice red G-10 would look nice too.

Agree, release a sprint or dealer exclusive with a deeper carry and shorter pocket clip, and a micarta showside scale. I am in for sure

Do they ship to Europe? I would be interested.

I'd go for 4v, 10v, or 15v and whatever dealer was associated with it!

Would love to see a S90v version of the brouwer and make the show side carbon fiber.

The Brouwer QCI version was a neat knife.
I never got around to picking one up, both because I have the niche pretty well covered and because I was focused on other things while they were available.

I think it would make an interesting Sprint/Exclusive with a high edge retention steel, S90V or MagnaMegaMax. I was quite fond of the OE G-10 color, so hopefully a Sprint would stick with a blue or green hue.
