Still not the knife for me but this is the one I'd want if it was. There's just no reality where I'm choosing this over the Military 2 and certainly not over a Bodacious.

Gotta say though I think this is one of the best looking handle/color combos in a long time.

The one thing I have seen rust somewhat is the liners, with these the liners will be DLC'd also and that sure will not hurt anything, plus what has already been mentioned, they will look killer.

i don't know about everyone else, but there heavyweights salts are not knives that i would treat like salts. i'm not putting them in my waistband and going to the beach with them. they are probably too heavy and bulky for the waistband of swim shorts. instead, like many have said since magnacut was announced as a salt steel, i just wanted a non-salt knife made with magnacut that i could use and worry about less. in my mind, these are great worry-free edc options. it doesn't have to be to survive a week in the ocean, but it would make a great camping companion or a great option for someone that has a physical job where they sweat a lot. for actual salty use, i will stick with my pacific or stretch xl, but these heavy salts are good at everything else. i'm just glad spyderco didn't put every magnacut blade into a lightweight handle, which was a real concern when they announced it would be part of their salt line.

Makes sense but I did take a Military 2 Salt and a Chief Salt into the ocean at the same time, for science. In this situation I'd choose ergonomics and size over weight.

I guess I am just different than most about the weights of our Spyderco knives. I never even consider the weight of our knives. The only thing that I look at is how well they are made and can I tear them down to clean them...

If you don't swim well enough to swim with the added weight of a couple Spyderco knives, you really have no business swimming period, with the exception of in the process of learning how to swim lol...

Me personally, I grew up on a big lake right out my back door, and I naturally swim better than a fish. Fish fear me lol, for good reason. I like to eat them lol...

Can't say I agree.

I treat my Military Salt just like a Pacific Salt and I see no reason not to. (with the caveat I don't trust the compression lock as much as the lockback to hold the blade shut while carrying IWB. I still carry the Military Salt IWB, it just wouldn't be my first choice for a trail running knife.)

I used to treat my S30V DLC Manix XL like a Pacific Salt too pretty much.

For me the Manix XL Salt will be the best option for a 365/24/7 EDC knife.

Compared to my Pacifics it has a more comfortable and secure grip, better edge holding, better geometry and a much more premium build quality feel.

Compared to the Military 2 Salt it has a lock I trust more to keep the knife shut and a more comfortable grip.

I like the Police better overall, sure, but those uncoated liners on the PD1 sprint mean I'm not going to carry mine much over the next few months. Not trying to go through this again:

The weather is beginning to cool off so I thought I'd get my Police 4 ready to go back into rotation.

I stopped carrying it months ago because I noticed the liners corroding.

The knife was carried fall 2018 to spring 2019.

I'm glad a stainless Police 4 is right around the corner.

At this rate one day we'll have the Police Salt, I'll buy ten, then retire from knife collecting

don't get me wrong... i also get annoyed by the gram weenies complaining about a few extra ounces. i don't have any problem carrying any spyderco knife and often carry much heavier cold steel knives. that's not a problem for me.


however, given the choice between a stretch 2 xl salt or the military 2 salt in my bathing suit waistband, clearly the stretch is going to be more comfortable. it's not that i don't trust the military 2 salt to work in the environment or that the knife is generally too heavy to carry for me. it's just a matter of what works best in the specific scenario.

don't worry about my swimming ability. i'm a florida boy and i can swim just fine. of course a few ounces isn't going to keep anyone from being able to swim. that's such an absurd idea that it should've been obvious it isn't what i was saying.

Vivi, you know that I kind of follow the "battle" for your favorite folder a bit and as soon as I saw the XL Salt I was actually wondering how it would compete for you.

Now the one thing the XL lacks a bit is cutting edge length (in relation to its overall footprint!), going by Spydercos specs it has 3.36" (86 mm), so a tad less than an Endura (3.44 " / 87 mm) and clearly less than a Millie (3.65" / 93 mm). The Police offers even more anyway (3.97" / 101 mm).

I figure its other advantages outweigh that?

/ I personally still hope (wait..?) for an FRCP LW version of this apparently amazing design, built just like the Manix 2 LW.
Make it SE and it might very well compete for the spot of my most favorite folder....

Well, there are quite some situations where I don´t care for the weight of a Spydie too, mostly in usual day-to-day-wearing-jeans scenarios.
I actually like the feel and balance of a bit heavier ones.

But that said:

- Not necessarily iwb (where the knife sits rather tight anyway) but rather when wearing light garment pants with more "floppy" pockets (like some climbing or hiking pants) a light knife just feel and works better for me

- .... and also in such pants tends to destroy pockets less or "less fast" (less stress on the garment due to the lighter weight and less "momentum" when the knife is moving).

- then, in mountaineering one just gets into the habit of grabbing the lighter gear if it works as well as heavier alternatives.
Now I am not saying that one exception like packing a Spydie that is a bit heavier makes a a ton of difference here. It really does not. But it is still nice to have the option also with Spyderco to make a pack for climbing and covering a lot of vertical distance as light as possible without sacrificing anything.

- Last but not least to me it is fascinating and a true art (of knife making) to create a knife that is really light, but still strong and tough and durable and up to any task I do with folders.
Don´t get me wrong, but in a way it is much easier and less of an "art" to go the way of "heavy liners, heavy handle material" if the goal is to create a strong and durable folder (which does not mean that heavy folders are not really nice too and can (do) often just feel better than lighter ones. In "my world" for example I do prefer the feel of the heavier weight and more heft of the linered Endura over the lighter Pac Salt, despite the latter really is strong enough for every task).
