Barong Sprint

Back in the foliage green everything days, Ed Schempp had some very interesting designs. The kukhri folder, barong, etc.

I handled them at new graham knives on a road trip but never pulled the trigger on any of them.

The Barong in particular gave me very split feelings.

Love the ergonomics. Locked in grip with a mild thumb ramp.

Nice negative blade angle paired with a useful blade shape.

Lovely shade of green.

So what kept me from buying one?

The whole plunge line situation never made sense to me.

If the plunge were brought back behind the opening hole and the choil was slightly re-shaped to have a slight guard, I really think this design would be a winner.

I loved the execution of every other aspect of this knife. Even the liner lock, one of my least favorite locks, was very well executed on this and the kuk.

Would this be a folder you'd be interested in seeing again?

I know a lot of members here got into Spyderco well after the foliage green era, so it'd basically be their first chance to try one. Very rare to see these up on the secondary market too.

Whatcha think? Crucarta? :cheap-sunglasses

I was fortunate to catch the tail end of the foliage green era. I never handled either of those to designs you mentioned. Ultimately I sat on the.fence of indecisiveness until I missed my opportunity to pick one of these up. Later I found a Barong on the secondary market, and I do love it's feel in hand along with the negative blade angle. I told myself if I ever saw the Khukuri or another Barong available I would grab on, but this 2nd Barong would go to be reground. If Spyderco decide to bring either of these back, I'm in with any combination of color & steel.

p.s. Vivi, did you take my image or did I take yours in Nov 2013? lol

That is a great color we don't see around much, unless you aftermarket the scales. That is an awesome looking knife there too. Don't see it around much.

Vivi, You should be getting your scales from Dimitri sometime this next week, for your Police4. You should really like them, I know I really like everything about mine.

There is a member here & over on USN that had a Spyderco Barong reprofiled by Tom Krein. Bringing the plunge line back behind the opening hole looked better and added more useable edge.

THAT is not a knife I'd be interested in, but THIS is.

I guess if they brought it back in a steel that I like enough to justify the additional cost of a regrind I'd be interested. That simple regrind turns a funky looking blade into a much more elegant and visually appealing design.

And I absolutely love the foliage green G10, I really wish they'd bring it back and assign it to a really nice steel run.

I really like it, if they would drop back the line for more edge.
The blade shape and design along with od green are winners in my book.
Also depends on how much $$ we’re talking to bring one home.

I'd get one if it had more sharpened cutting edge.

Not likely to be made again with the same maker. Perhaps some time in the future, we might be able to bring it back with another maker?

I assume Moki is still not a viable option either?

Hi Landon,

Not at this time, in my opinion.

Please bring it back; it was around before my time as a Spyderco fan. I'm Filipino and I love barongs. I'm looking forward to the new Balance sprint, I've never handled a Schemp design before.

Hi Bdubs,

Ed Schempp is a brilliant designer and designs that we produced of his are all exceptional. I would grab one any where you can. Reproducing those models are not possible a this time. Some of his designs like his "Kris" are not only exquisite designs, but they were very well made, and the designs are timeless. The original maker has passed and some of Ed's deigns are very challenging to make. I'll throw it at the team and see what can be done.

I personally liked the Khukuri a bit better, in proportions... But would fully support a return of the Barong as well.

That Krein regrind is totally transforming!
Going back to Caly.

I'm a maybe. The Schempp Khukuri holds more appeal for me too. I like Ed's designs with the gigantic choil more than the giant ricasso.
