Vintage Spyderco find today

G10 ATS55 Police SE, brand new. Imagine my surprise when I spotted this laying out over a white Spyderco box today at the gun shop!

Some detail shots:

pocket clip

Image

centering is good

Image

never realized these are single liner construction. handle is thicker than the stainless police, which I prefer.

Image

Interesting that these were full flat grind. Classic, iconic full SE Police blade otherwise.

Image

odd seeing hex screws and philips screws on a spyderco. not sure I've ever owned a Spyderco with philips screws before. I believe my old S60V Military used hex or torx for the clip screws.

Image

The only thing I can knock on the fit and finish is where the blade and lockbar meet. the rest of the backspacer is beautifully finished.

Image

Image

I like the lack of jimping and boye dent

Image

The G10 texture is much different than the current texture.

vs military 2

Image

vs police 3 g10

Image

Comparing the contouring on the corner of the scales to the Military 2 in my pocket I can't help but feel things have moved in the wrong direction here. It's so much better on the old Police.

Cool score! NOS finds are always fun. That things a beauty, I love how it doesn't have jimping. Even the box is still in good condition too. 👍

I almost guessed Police too but switched by guess last second because I thought "Surely, Vivi has seen a brand new never used Police in person" but I just wasn't being specific enough. :cheap-sunglasses

Funny thing is I saw a similar Police at this shop before, but in CF. Passed on it and never saw it again. Bought this one on the spot knowing this would probably be my only chance to ever buy one in person.

The guy responsible for their knife selection has good taste. Spyderco, Cold Steel, Chris Reeve, Hogue, Victorinox, Benchmade, ZT, customs, etc. Never know what you'll find as they sell used knives too, anything from beat up old slipjoints to 1800's military issue battle sabers. This is where I got an SOG Seal Pup Elite for $15 a couple years ago.

That’s an awesome find. Now did it have the original price tag from the 90’s?

Wow, really cool. I've never seen one of those either. I have a serrated GIN-1/2 stainless Police from before the G10 debuted, and the action is still smooth glass and the lockup solid as a rock. Has those darn Phillips screws too. I guess all the early ones did. Agree more chamfer is better than less, and my example is very generously chamfered. Strange that Spyderco would move away from a superior ergonomic feature.

Have you decided whether to use yours?

By the way, I absolutely agree on the contouring. It seems better for the pocket and the hand.

Dang man, awesome find! Looks great in hand (and what I think a G10 Grasshopper would look like in mine! :squinting-tongue )

My old S60V military (SE, single liner, dino jimping) also has Phillips screws in the clip. Old school charm!

Yeah I would have scooped this up too and I agree with the edge beveling thing too, I miss the days of wider handle bevels like the Rock Lobster had.

At first I was on the fence but the more I handle it the more I think I'll carry it once in a while. The handle is thicker than my well loved police 3, it fits me great.

Nice find. This sounds like a good strategy. When I read your first post I came here to admonish you to carry it some and use it at least lightly.

You're going to appreciate that thing more than most anyone else.

Enjoy it. I love finding NIB vintage Spyderco!

Did you find the knife, or did the knife find you?

Finding vintage Spydies is a whole other kind of fun.

Very nice! I always liked the G10 on the old school Police and Rookie models. Wish I'd never sold my Rookie.

Nice Find Vivi,

Thanx for the trip down memory lane. When I look at older designs of mine and remember my thinking at the time, as to the "why" I did what I did, fun.
