The Delica problem

#1

Post by Palestrina »

Hello again,

after purchasing my first two Spyderco knives - the Lil' Native and the Urban - my third one roughly half a year ago was the Delica 4, VG-10, saber grind.

And then it all began.

I've been interested in the Native 5, but then I thought to better get the Delica K390 before it gets discontinued. Received it, loved it - bought a second one as a backup, just in case, you know?

But what if something breaks or I ruin something when cleaning it? I'll better get me a basic Delica as a parts carrier - finally, peace of mind. And the option to create a Frankenstein K390 with black scales, maybe...

Yes, the Native 5, and I'm really, really looking forward to the Lil' Native lightweight. I'm gonna get me a Native 5 now... but better get the Delica Wharncliffe first, in case it gets discontinued - I've been late to the party and already missed out on the K390 Wharncliffe, so at least get the regular one.

Now I can't leave the house without one of these two...

And now I still don't have a Native 5, and in the back of my head I'm thinking about serrated Delicas...

How do I break this cycle?

Stick with what you like! The rabbit hole has many paths... The fewer models you feel the need to buy the better, trust me.

PS, have you seen the Pakkawood Delica ;)

^ Don't forget the Superblue Delica that's exclusively available from Spyderco. Then there's the Salt 2, which is essentially a linerless Delica.

What was the question again? :)

Well at least you chose the greatest pocket knife of all time to be obsessed with. :cheap-sunglasses

Did you know the Tasman Salt is basically a hawkbill linerless Delica? :winking-tongue

If you get a full-linered Delica (like the Pakkawood version) you can make your own custom scales.

best way to break the cycle is a lc200n pe wharncliffe salt 2, an all black h2 se salt 2, and a h2 se talisman salt 2 in yellow.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Man all those Delicas and not one PD#1 sprint. Even though once they're gone, they're gone for ever. Even though they're in stock at SMKW and the 10% off discount code Lst10off23 is valid for them. Even though the link for them is right here...

Hello again,

...
Good evening (where WE live..) my Austrian country fellowman, nice to "hear" from you again! :clinking-mugs

Well, concerning your problem:

To me the Delica in one or the other variant just IS the best folder one can get in that particular size range - I personally clearly prefer it over the Native 5 (which you should try anyway though! Amazingly solid lockup (yes, better than most Delicas) and looks just so cool imo)

My recommendations for your next Delica

- Yes,serrations indeed!!

I am not a fan of the fully serrated VG10 Delica, cause it only comes in sabre grind (I can recall though that you like your PE sabre grind Delica?).
I´d go with the K390 SE (if you still can find one), the Salt 2 SE (in LC200N) or, special tip, the thin red/blue line Delica (can still be found), which is "only" partly serrated though (all three suggestions ffg, not sabre grind)

Salt 2

Already mentioned, but the Salt 2 is an amazing "Delica" with some distinct differences:
- Linerless, thus superlight, but still really strong
- An a bit longer, more handle filling blade and thus edge
- A larger opening hole and thus an a bit taller blade (and a steeper thumb ramp)
- A more sheepsfooty, stronger tip (still pointy enough in the ffg variant)
- An a bit thicker, more hand filling handle (with otherwise the exact Delica dimensions)
- And of course: Super corrosion resistant

You can go with LC200N and ffg (my suggestion, and of course SE ;) or H2 and a hollow sabre grind

Supersize it!! :beaming-face
- ... and get a larger sibling, the Endela (great in SE!!) or the Endura... ;)

Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)
