Vent - chip bags are dumb

#1

Post by BearShark44 »

Quick vent about how chip bags are dumb.
I have very sharp Spydercos from sage 1 max to endela k390, mule 15v, etc.
These slice through paper, cardboard, paracord, most things as intended. They're awesome.
However... every single chip or food bag is dumb and says "nope, that ain't happening."
The blade catches when slicing through and tears in the wrong @!&! direction that I fix with tape.
It's so demoralizing for a knife enthusiast.
I'm sure there's a Frito-Lay materials expert that could explain why, maybe Chester the cheetah?
I'm guessing because the bag is loose it needs to be held taught for the blade to stay on the edge.
But it's wafer thin plastic and dang it I just want my $200 knife to cut it without thinking about it.
Whew... not sure I feel better. Chip bags are still dumb, but at least there's guacamole.

Before opening the chips, breathe deeply and imagine being in your happy place.

I don't understand people that use a knife (or scissors) to open chip bags.

that said any properly sharpened knife should have no issue with food packaging like this or cliff bars.

Usually, I carefully open the bag with my bare hands in a controlled manner. If that fails, I use sissors.

What? Dude! So I KNOW you care about food quality and aesthetics. So many foodstuffs are packaged in bags that can't be resealed. It's got to be a conspiracy. But I have them beat. I like to make a clean cut on the packaging, remove what I want, and then stick the open bag into the sucky machine. I remove some the air and then reseal the bag. It's as good as new. I also like the sucky machine for packaging up sauces. It might be the most used kitchen appliance.

I guess that makes sense for a large bag of chips. I don't snack on them often, so when I do it's a small single serving bag that won't need re-sealed.

Scissors are my first choice, but I have never had an issue with a properly sharp Spyderco knife. The technique is different, however.

Besides, who makes a bag out of chips? :winking-tongue

I would suggest trying a Police 4 with spyderedge on a long, swinging arc ….

I disagree. Scissors have their advantage in many cases, but for opening most food packaging I get perfectly clean cuts with my pocket knife. The exception is when opening messy things like fresh meat etc. - then I use a basic kitchen knife that I can throw in the dishwasher afterwards e.g. Counter puppy

I'll let you in on a little secret, vivi. Kids love candy and snacks (that's surely not the secret) and while they often seem ignorant to the world around them and give off the impression they never hear anything you say to them, they will hardly ever miss the sound of a crackly bag of goodies being opened anywhere in the house. Now, here comes the secret part; if you have a properly sharpened knife, like I know you have, you can slice the bag open in its place, right there inside the kitchen drawer/upper cupboard/pantry etc. without even touching the bag, gently lift one side of the opening with the tip of your knife, snag a few bites and leave the crime scene totally unnoticed

This is funny because this is a weird metric that lives in my mind that I think about when comparing plain edge to serrations. If my serrations won't cleanly slice open a bag of chips then they're not sharp enough.

Must not be a very sharp knife. I just hold up the bag by the top, put the edge to left side of the bag and slice right across. Smooth as butter.

Agreed. Because I am trying to be faithful to the Naperville Diet I have eaten less of these. I used to eat a family sized bag of chips with dip in one sitting. The worst is when you try to tear it open abd it goes everywhere. I used the scissor method and then the Cold Steel Opinel Spyderco method.

I stopped eating chips years ago. The one exception was a couple weeks ago, when I bought some Lay's potato chips to take on a flight to the east coast (Massachusetts). I never eat airplane food, and that's about all I would eat on a flight.

I used to sometimes have bags tear when cutting them. It's normally better to just pull them open at the top/seal.

Restaurant I worked in used these:

They worked pretty well, but I’m not a big fan of uni-taskers.

According to the technology Singularity people smart materials based on nano robots will allow total shape changing stuff like the T1000 Terminator but in everything from chip bags and knives to buildings and vehicles and beyond, under human control.

At the rate of weapons development we will have lasers to open bags of chips within 5 years.
