Police 4 assembly
Hello all my name is Dale,I'm new to this forum but not to Spyderco I have a few and I've owned many thru the year Spydercos are my favorite pocket knife brand.. Not the introductions are over I have a question. When I first get any knife I like to disassemble them and clean them the police 4 I just got was very gritty so I wanted to clean it while it is apart I dies the frn scales of I'm sorry its a k390 police anyway I've been trying since last night to put it back together and I just cannot do it the problem is the stupid little penI don't see how it ever fit I'm extremely irritated with if somebody could help I very much would appreciate it. Thank you in advanced I be looking forward to hopefully many discussions with ya'll.

Re: Police 4 assembly
The tricky part about the Police 4 is probably the piece giving you trouble. There's a pin that reinforces where the spring for the lock sits.
I don't own one any more (this was a contributing factor), but my method for putting it back together was to build up the back side of the knife first. Scale, liner, pins and screws, lock bar, spring, and finally the blade.
Once everything was in place, then I'd carefully set the liner and scale from the show side on top, press it together, then put the other half of the screws in. This step usually took a few tries.
The problem is the pressure from the lock bar spring wants to make the plastic housing flex. The pin fixes that, but makes re-assembly a pain, as you're finding out.
good luck.

Re: Police 4 assembly
Spyderco FRN lockbacks can be a bit tricky to disassemble/reassemble (don't ask me how I know...)
Nick Sabazz happens to have a video on the disassembly of the Police 4 that you might find helpful:

Re: Police 4 assembly
The greatest challenge isn't getting that pin located properly.
The greatest challenge is getting that pin located properly without cutting yourself.
Take your time. It's a good knife and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Nick’s way is the best. Source: I’ve disassembled/reassembled multiple Police 4.
Re: Police 4 assembly
Hey guys thank you so much for the welcome and the advise. I watched the video and Nicks way seems to be the only way to reassemble the knife I had to insist the help of my girl friend but we got it back together again. When I clean it again I guess I won't be disassembling it anymore I guess under the faucet will have to do lol. By the way this k390 steel is amazing. Thank ya'll again.
Re: Police 4 assembly
I reassemble most of my backlocks a bit differently than Nick.
1. I don't put the blade in and reassemble the handle leaving the front-most screw a bit loose (enoguh to be able to spread the handles a bit at the pivot). You can leave all the screws not fully tightened to make it even easier
2. Now I stick something into the handles to spread them a bit at the pivot (folded up tissue or piece of paper)
3. Then I tie/tape/hold down the lock bar in the open position
4. Stick the washers to the blade with a drop of oil
5. Now carefully insert the blade with washers in the handle, thread the pivot through and assemble fully

horzuff this sounds like a better at least sounds easier than Nicks. I've got some olive drabe g10 scales coming in in a couple of weeks I'll give this way a go. Thank you.horzuff wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 4:35 amI reassemble most of my backlocks a bit differently than Nick.

Re: Police 4 assembly
I put the lock bar in last kinda like Shabazz does, but still a little differently.
I engage the lock bar to the tang of the blade and roll it into position.
once the lock bar makes contact with the spring, I put the barrel (Chicago screw) in the hole where it's going to go, then continue to push the lock bar against the spring (but still engaged to the tang of the blade) and push the barrel through.
Engaging the lock bar to the tang (where it locks) and rotating it in helps to align the hole.
