Cru-carta Chaparral

#1

Post by JoviAl »

I have been carrying my new Chaparral LW SE for the last week or so and cannot get over what a fantastic little knife it is. I was trying to think of what (if anything) I would change about it if given the choice. The only thing I could think of was “this thing would be extra ludicrous good as a Cru-Carta SE model”.

I wonder if we might ever see such a thing. I live in hope, but I’m extremely grateful to have this current incarnation until that day comes (or doesn’t 🤪). What a knife!

I'm sure that would be a popular release, but I thought the point of the Chaparral line is to test new handle materials. Cru-carta seems like a "solved problem". I'd rather see newer, different (at least compared to Spyderco's normal offerings) handle materials.

I’m down with other handle materials than micarta, I’m just particularly keen on Cruwear.

The point of chaparral is that it is a knife that a lot of people actually like to use on a daily basis. Sure it started as a handle showcase but it is evolving.

Different handle material, especially the fancier ones, make it a sock drawer specimen, at least for me.

SE chaparral is the bomb. I would definitely get one in cruwear.

However, I don’t really care for different handle materials, LW is all I need, G10 is fine too.

The Micarta on the CrueCarta models is the opposite of fancy. It's kind of a ragged user feel.

I think that would detract from the nicer vibe the Chaparral has.

I think the best chance of this happening is an eventual frankenstein Chaparral.

Sal has repeatedly said the Chaparral LW was created as a way of introducing more variation to the series aside from just handle material. If anything, I would expect some form of micarta Chaparral with CTS-XHP steel. Then a Chaparral LW sprint run or exclusive model that utilizes CruWear steel. Combining them to create a “Cru-carta Chaparral.”

Sounds good. More variations of the Chaparral can only a good thing… but I’ll be the first to say it: G10 and Magnacut please. ;)

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I actually prefer CPM Cruwear to Magnacut. I’ve got a fair pile of both and use them extensively for work and play. While Magnacut literally is as good (if not better even) than the hype, there’s something about CPM Cruwear that just sharpens up that bit easier and holds that absolute razor edge just that bit longer than magnacut for me. YMMV but it holds a special place in my heart.

Now, just to be clear I’m not saying I wouldn’t buy a Magnacut chap - I’m not insane 😂 I’d just really really really like an SE one of both steels, cos, y know… reasons.

XHP is a fine steel, so I'd buy a Chap with XHP and canvas micarta.

But a CruCarta Chap is one I'd buy 2 of. In a heartbeat.

I love MagnaCut, but would likely pass on a MC Chap. Not enough of a bump from XHP to justify.

A Cruwear Chaparral would be an instant buy for me.
But given the purpose of the Chaparral something like Richlite would make a more interesting scale material IMO
Cru-Lite has a nice ring to it.
