Hello Everyone!

I just joined your forum and love Spyderco products as much as you guys. However, I would like to respectfully inform Spyderco and you guys that I served as a federal law enforcement officer as an ICE Agent prior to joining the US Intelligence Community and now enjoying myself after hanging up the spear. The Federal Switchblade Act of 1958 only applies to the interstate shipping of auto knifes using the US Postal Service. The law does not apply to private carriers like UPS, DHL or FEDEX. If the online seller ships using a private carrier that seller is well within compliance of federal law and neither the seller or the buyer are violating the law.

This is a FACT!!! It is my recommendation that Spyderco seek better or more properly informed legal advisors. I think that someone in their legal team may have applied the federal statute in a "blanket manner" as we say in legal terms and in honest human error without properly investigating the details and nuances of the law. That is why most online sellers advice that it is the responsibility of the buyer to comply with his/her local and state laws. The origin of the Federal Switchblade Act really was primarily to provide for the safety of our postal workers out of concern that a worker not knowledgeable or trained in the use of this type of knife might accidentally encounter an automatic blade and accidentally activate it, leading to serious injury. I'm giving facts as someone who enforced federal law- this specific law would also fall under the enforcement jurisdiction of the US Postal Inspectors who are Series 1811 Criminal Investigators and US Postal Police if a uniformed officer discovers an auto blade inside a "US Postal Service" package. I don't want to see a great company like Spyderco lose potential customers over this confusion and that's why I'm writing this. I hope it helps clarify the issue and I look forward to enjoying your forum.

Been while with no replies on this, but it makes sense because certain dealers will ship autos without question, all they require is checking a box at checkout, and they tend to ship via FedEx or DHL. This is how I got 2 of my 3 Autonomy's.

I keep informing people as the Federal switchblade law still stands you still need to understand how and how not to ship an autoknife.
Also even as many states now allow people to carry an autoknife, because the Federal switchblade law is still standing if a lawenforcment officer "cop" take it on themself they can arrest you and take your knife they can always say they had probable cause to take such action.
