Spyderco knives stiff to open?

#1

Post by azad121 »

Hey there,

i've bought many spyderco knives now and they were ALL very stiff to open. I can't open them with the hole i always have to use two hands.

I recently got the matriarch 2 and it's the same with that. Is that a common spyderco problem? Should I return and get my 10th new spyderco knife?

I have never had a Spyderco that took both hands to open. I would just loosen the Axle screw or screws just a little at a time till I got the blade like I wanted. Least that is what I do on mine... Just say'n.

I got the PD#1 Endela sprint the other day, and a Leafjumper and Stretch 2XL last month. None of them were difficult to open one-handed.

For me, the hardest folder to open one-handed is the GiantMouse Ace Nimbus v2.

Ten new Spyderco knives, and none could be opened with one hand?
I don't know how many Spydercos I've ever owned, but all could be opened with one hand.

Just tweak the pivot screw a bit? Very easy knives to work with. Likely need a T8 or T10 bit.

I always use my thumb to get it started and flick it out with my wrist.

As others have said, if it's that tight, loosen the screws a bit. That and add a drop of oil on the pivot.

I was thinking the same. Given how horrendous CBSA are with knives that you can flick open - no matter how hard you need to reef on ‘em to do so - many knives come across the boarder with very tight pivots.
Even then, however, I rarely get a knife that is so tight that it cannot be opened with the thumb.

As a side note, they all break in nicely after some use, and my Spydies are all buttery smooth. The newer models are far smoother than the Spydies of yesteryear.

Spyderco's aren't hard opening unless you are someone that begun your knife use with flippers and think that is how knives should open.

I have over 200 at the house and none are difficult to open. My guess is the OP is referring to back locks bias towards closing when opening/closing which is a feature of the design not a fault. It is one of the reasons I carry back lock designs.

What's the name of the store that sold 10 unopenable knives? I have to put that on my nope list.

I came from flippers, had several of them then started to collect Spyderco. I think you can get a Spyderco open just as fast.

I must own ~20 to 25 Spydercos. One or two may be a little stiff but I leave them alone until I am ready to carry them every day for a year or two. I do not want to mess with the factory setup until necessary. I leave my knives alone. I repeat, I am not in any hurry to mess with the factory setup.

If this is an issue for your carry knife then do as the other posters say and losen the knife up very very slowly. A very loose knife is not a good knife and will have all the wrong feel to it when you are under stress and using a knife.

I do NOT buy knives based on their ability to drop shut or flick open.

I have had dozens of Spydies and none were difficult to open or easily tune to that state, with one exception. That would be the Lil' Temperance LW released a little while back. The darn thing is either easy to open with unacceptable blade play, or tuned for no blade play but unacceptably difficult to open. I'd feel irresponsible even selling it or gifting it away. I guess one stinker out of all my many Spideys is okay.

The last two Spydies I’ve bought, one Golden and one China, were impossible to open and had to be loosened. It’s inexplicable. They should ship a torx set with the knives if they do this. Huge miss by QC.

The closest I've ever seen to "impossible to open" from Spyderco was a P.I.T.S. that survived at least 3 seconds sales. The action was so rough that it took two hands and determination to get it open.

I handled that same P.I.T.S folder at the seconds sale, for what it’s worth. That thing might even still be floating around the sale this year! :grin-squint

Do you have some sort of disability or age factor ? I find it unusual you would have same issues with 10 products from Spyderco and not address this with the warranty department . MG2

Would some kind of knife oil help? None of the Spyderco knives I have or have had ever had a stiff opening. Other brands, yes. Spyderco are always smooth to open and close from my personal experience. Even friends have told me how amazed they were at the ease of opening a Spyderco folder.

YMMV, but if you do not like stiff opening knives I have knives I can recommend in Off Topic what you NOT BUY.

I never had a Spyderco folder that I could NOT OPEN but some manufacturers actually ship them!
