Huh, never seen Barkeeper's Friend do this...

#1

Post by Mage7 »

Got this Rex 45 M2LW from GP Knives. Fell asleep with it clipped on my shirt collar and I guess my skin rusted it on the spine near the thumb hole. I put some Barkeeper's Friend on it, and check out what it did to the logo.

No big deal, but I didn't know it could do that to laser etchings. I'd be wondering if it was counterfeit if I hadn't got it direct from GP.

I had something similar happen to the etching on my Vtoku2 Dragonfly years ago when I forced a patina below the lamination line over night. Had it soaked in vinegar I believe and the next morning the etching was basically non existent.

I've seen a few tool steel knives have the logo do that when I've forced a patina.

I just grabbed a bottle of BKF I have here under the sink and looked at the ingredients. It lists oxalic and citric acids and warns on the label that it can etch surfaces. Nasty stuff.

I’ve only used BKF on brass.

Sounds like it munched on the bug. Did you rinse it with water after using it?

On the contrary these ingredients are both found in a variety of edible fruits and vegetables and are safe for human consumption in small quantities.

The acids in BKF will react with steel just like vinegar, blood, or fruit juices that other members often show themselves using to force a patina.

It's safe to apply on surfaces that are used for food prep. However, it's the concentration of these organic acids that make it very caustic.

The black in the bug logo is made of iron oxides, which Bar Keeper’s Friend is good at removing.

It's a really handy place to clip a knife, especially during a heatwave when I don't wanna wear pants around the house lol

Interesting, I have used it on a few other blades but not sure if they've been tool steels or not. I'd imagine so, though, because I don't have many stainless steels, plus I guess I wouldn't have reason to use it on those.

That's what I was thinking, but I have never seen it happen to any of the other logos on blades I have cleaned with it, so thought it was weird. But the only other ones I can think I have done it on were on 15V and D2, so maybe the steel composition also matters.

Was mostly just hoping it wasn't somehow ink. I'm getting paranoid about counterfeits lol
