NIB Golden Age of Spyderco Horde

#1

Post by clovisc »

Hey everyone - it's been a while. I couldn't resist sharing this little horde of NIB golden age spydies I recently picked up. They truly look as new as the day they were made. I feel pretty lucky to have been able to purchase them.

This one's for you, JD! :)

That is an impressive find!

I see a JD Smith. And two Calypso SE's? Not sure about the other two.

I especially like the old polished micarta models. I only have one, a JD Smith SE ATS-34.

Are you planning to use them?

Hello!

In the first picture I like the knife at the top of the image. Nice blade profile. Which model is that?

Thank you ahead of time.

Finds like these are always fun. It's really cool pulling out a pristine knife discontinued decades ago. Those white boxes are really nostalgic for me too. I had a few of those and a ton of the spiderweb boxes early on, before they switched to the current design.

Being a big fan of the old school Spyderco models from what I affectionately call the GOLDEN ERA ( 1998 to 2004) I can only envy your great find. That full SE big Calypso is one of my all time favorite Spyderedged models. The JD Smith is literally "timeless" classic. The GOLDEN Era has always intrigued me like no other.

A fabulous discovery!!

That IMPALA model is the only guthook folder that I've ever liked. You are to be congratulated.

Congrats!

The JD Smith is my favorite of the 20+ different collaborations I have. What a slicer! I have the original micarta and dupes of the foliage-green G10 sprint, but my recent eBay bid on the rare black G10 sprint (Japan only?) didn’t win.

I’d love to see the JD Smith released again with a hollow-grind, like the original, perhaps in SPY27 (an upgrade to VG10 in the sprints). But is today’s Ayoob-maker ready for the challenge?

Failing a new variant of the JD Smith, I wonder if JD Smith, himself, and Spyderco might be up for a new collaboration with the original’s slicy aesthetic.

I am a long-running fan of the JD Smith. Until now, I never had an original PE in micarta - only the SE. It is definitely an excellent combination of style and function.

The reissues are always very cool, but the originals prompt a sense of nostalgic satisfaction I can't get from anything else. :)

I recently got one of those micarta Calypsos and it's an amazing knife. It's absolutely baffling to think that knife "failed". While there are options I would pick first today, I really love the Calypso family because I think they're sort of the ergonomic grandfathers of all modern designs.

Congrats on that score evil d, the micarta c52 and 54 are my grail folding edc knives, for pride of ownership and to use as functional tools. I’ll own them some day.

The Calypso and the JD Smith each has such a graceful blade profile to my eye.

I think it’s no coincidence that these profiles are not tall but short, and that they came out within a year or two of each other.
