ARK and La Griffe

#1

Post by Christian Noble »

Thought folks here would find this interesting. I have (several) ARKs and recently got a Fred Perrin Ti La Griffe by Max Knives. With Perrin and the relationship to Spyerco, including several products designed by him, I was not surprised that the finger-choil on the ARK and the finger-hole on the La Griffe were identical in size (see pics).

Really like both these knives of which my amateur self feels they are very similar in grip for self-defense, but obviously different in utilitarian use and materials.

What I like about the ARK is the flatness of the sheath, so it doesn’t spin and zero rattle - very well done. The blade shape also lends itself to excellent utilitarian use and very easy to sharpen being H1. Thumb ramp also is very good for utilitarian (and SD) use in a straight thrust or twist of the wrist. Good secure grip with textured FRN where La Griffe being bare metal, knowing the finger hole is there is nice, although still extremely good grip being nestled into your palm — which the ARK does too.

What I like about the La Griffe is slightly quicker deployment from inserting finger in the hole, very secure grip with finger hole and slight pistol grip; and, as much as you hardly notice carrying the ARK, you don’t even know the La Griffe is there at all. I am not sure about the Ti blade yet, new to me, but very sharp and a slicer right out of the box.

One last thing about Perrin, seeing the Spyderco Street Bowie finding its way more and more onto tactical vests in the military with its slim design and practical deep index-finger choil. Nephew is is deployed in Irag right now; probably going to get him that knife. And makes you appreciate that very similar choil on the ARK that much more, glad to see there will be an H2 version in PE.

I hope we see a new edition of the plain edge ARK in Magnacut or LC200N.

I am not at all a self defense practitioner, but I do agree with the mentality of not liking finger holes because they'll probably break your finger. Maybe in the end that's an acceptable risk vs defending your life? I feel like when it really counts, few people will have the motor skills to even get their finger into the hole for a proper grip. I think a deep open choil like the ARK or Street Beat is a better solution that allows for more reliable quick reflex grabs than a finger hole can provide.

A post like on a push dagger with a T that fits in the hand is the best, but they are illegal, of course. I also don't like finger holes. I think they would hurt the finger if the knife had to be stabbed and it has a serious potential for breaking the finger in several scenarios I can envision.
