Aside from sharpening knives, what did you use your Sharpmaker for?

Post by nerdlock »

Quirky question, but I thought we'd start a thread sharing what are other non-traditional uses for the Sharpmaker that you have done?

Earlier, we duplicated a few sets of keys for some rooms in the house, but the keymaker was in a hurry to close shop, so the ridges of the keys were sharp and full of "burrs". So when I got home, I brought out the Sharpmaker and, like sharpening serrations, knocked off those pesky "burrs" and slightly refined the ridges. It feels and turns in the lock much better now.

I've used the rods to help polish the tang on a few blades to help smooth out opening action.

I've used the brown rods to knock down some rough edges on non-knife metal items. The Sharpmaker also works very well for scissors.

Scissors, Ar15 trigger polishing, de-burring sharp edges on metal items. Did a Fiskars hatchet edge re-profile once.

I have used mine to polish a few sets of PB washers and I've sharpened lots of fish hooks with it as well.

Scissors, hairdresser's scissors, deburring on metal parts, polishing metal with the UF rod.
Maybe there's other things, but it doesn't come to mind right now.

I used an old broken brown rod the other day for deburring the steer tube on a new bike frame after cutting it down to size. Worked well on the outer rim, less well on the inner rim.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I used a broken UF rod to dress the grinding wheels on my bench grinder.

Brock O Lee, never thought of that, I have deburred my lawn mower blades depending on how bad it is. A clean cut is better for your grass.

Same here, I’ve sharpened a bunch of fish hooks with my Sharpmaker stones.

I’ve also sharpened a micro bevel into a Szabohawk with the Sharpmaker stones as well.

I'll have to check out the video again. I don't remember how Sal showed how to sharpen scissors. It seemed counterintuitive when I saw it before, but, if it works, I'll give it a shot.

Door stop. I'm serious.

After giving the hinges to my workout/knife room some WD40 the door wouldn't stay open after I did that and my dog likes to lay in the doorway while I work out, so I grabbed the Sharpmaker so he wasn't the door stop haha.

Tried to sharpen my scissors but it didn't seem to work that well... seems like I haven't done things properly 🤔

Funny that y'all mention scissors, as I've always struggled to get them sharp - sometimes they would end up duller than when I started.

But this week I sharpened the scissors on two Victorinox Swiss Army knives and my small Fiskars Softgrip. I had trouble feeling the bevel on the SAKs and ended up holding the scissors in one hand and using the Sharpmaker stones as files - it worked great!

The Fiskars has a wide bevel and was easy to sharpen like Sal shows in the video; they're sharper than from the factory after the white stone. I also worked on my hairdressing scissors last night but didn't manage to get the tip back to factory sharpness.

I was wondering that too, but I'm going to check out the video and see how it works.
