ARGH!! aus6 blades gone rusty!

#1

Post by disorder »

hi all, i did a terrible discover right now..i opened my desk where i hold all my knives (more than 2o spydies inbetween) and i've found on my aus6 spot and spydercard small dots of rust !! ..no moisture ,no water, no dirt, the others knives are all fine..i live in a seaside town, but no direct exposure to salt water..the only thing i can think of is that both spydercard and spot been exposed to sweat ..in wallet or at neck..this could be a cause ? not aus6 problema but a carry problem ? anybody ?

If you live in a seaside town, it is necessary to protect stainless steels from corrosion. Direct exposure to the water or perspiration is not a prerequisite to rust. Even inland, in humid environments, it is necessary to protect stainless steels, ESPECIALLY if the knives are not kept at a constant temperature at all times. Think of a cold drink suddenly exposed to hot weather. Water vapor condenses on the outside of the can. The same happens to a knife or firearm when it is carried from a cool building into summer heat, or from cold winter weather into a warm building. Chromium is the major element added to steel to make stainless steel, but if enough chromium is added to absolutely prevent rust, there is not enough iron left in the steel to perform the task of cutting. All knife steels will rust. Stainless steel makes it less likely that rust will start before the user can get home to wipe it down. A friend of mine can rust unprotected S30V in a matter of hours, with his body chemistry. He uses Militec. My perspiration seems less toxic, and I have had good results with Sentry Solutions products, or Break-free CLP and Wilson Ultima-lube as substitutes.

I'd suggest an Eraser(if needed) and some Flitz metal polish for the removal of the rust. I also use the Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide and Marine Tuf-Cloth for rust prevention and lubrication on the pivots.

If you're not familiar with the Eraser, check out this link;

a pencil eraser will get rid of the rust spots.

BTW,,,,some wood absorb moisture in the air and/or by direct contact.

I second the Flitz. Great stuff. Use it on my knives and my Harley.

I'm another of those people whose sweat will corrode unprotected stainless in a matter of hours. I have found that wiping my blades down with a Tuff-Cloth once a week or so seems to protect them, as long as they aren't worn directly against my skin.

However, I've given up on wearing neck knives that aren't coated or made of a corrosion-proof metal (Talonite, Stellite, Boye Dendritic Cobalt, or Titanium).

i've found in italy none of the products you named..i bought a firearm lubrificant-anticorrosive for marine environment, seems working..thanks for the eraser trick..didnt think about it, i was using abrasive "cream" -dunno the word in english-
..well the worst is passed

Aloha! Yup, go there with the Flitz or Mother's polish...then use Marine Tuf-Cloth. Here in Hawaii, I've had no real problems with ats, aus8, but for some reason, all my aus6 stuff rusts quicker no matter what...especially the bead blasted stuff. I think it's a chromium thing...My Spydercard was definitely sensitive to the climate here! Also, I got rid of a LOT of my CRKT stuff as most of them if not all were aus6. The only thing I kept was my Casper folder, but I use Tuf-Glide on it and I don't have the rust probs like the KISS knives I've HAD.

Beadblasting tends to give lots of little pits for moisture to hold, thus increasing the chances of getting rust.

yes, it's true that aus6 keep rusty quicker, today, after all the treatment , i weared the spot under shirt on skin, then i took a ride in motorbike (a suzuki gsx, dynarider, sorry and the other is a 1973 Ducati Scrambler)
..when stopping ,under the leather jacket i swear a lot..when at home the little dots of rust are flowering again !
think i'll wear the spot OVER the shirt. And i'll MUST order the Tuff-Cloth in USA, here nobody knows about it or Militec or 4cpl...sadly.

my best
