Sharpeners Guide to the Galaxy (of blades) or Blades of (sharp) Glory

Is there a compendium of sharpening of all the different steels all in one place? It seems a sharpening bible broken down to all steels or non steels is a handy thing once you have a dozen different steels in your collection. Every steel does different things and different methods can bring out certain qualities, it would just be so helpful to look up S30V to find out that 600 grit is the best finishing grit and what the bit will be like and perhaps what compound and how many strips for example.

Don't have anything helpful to add, except I love the title.

Yes! But I was wondering if there was a place organized where you can look up sharpening by the specific steels. A sharpening wiki if you will, organized and categorized where someone or some people have checked all the ways that are best. I think something like this would be great on Knife Steel Nerds website. There are a plethora of places to look but I don’t know if a singular source for all the mainstream and not so mainstream knife steels. This would bring more people down the steel rabbit hole if there was a great universal source of optimal sharpening tips and techniques able to be updated for all the new steels to come in the market

There is a thread called "The Seven Secrets of Sharpening Redux" on BF that has a more extensive guide to sharpen any steel.
Specific by steel is something hard to find because the method stays the same, it mostly comes down to preference.
I've seen people allocating abrasives in relation to the main carbide formers in a steel but I'd have to search for that after work ^^
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

I personally dont like this idea from steel alone. Geometry, heat treat, blade shape, even stone selection has an onslaught of issues. For me there is alot of joy experimenting with all the stones i own. And confirming my convictions on a specific knife instead of a steel.

Agree, steel alloy vs stone type vs edge geometry vs technique and personal experience/preferences are all variables that do not fit into a spreadsheet of recommendations/rules.

I enjoy sharpening and experimenting while learning about techniques.

Yes, there will have to be discussion on edge geometry etcetera. The point is an authoritative compendium categorized by steel to give people a one source for guidance

I agree fully. Sharpening is a Zen thing that presupposes the entire knife, the tools you apply to it, and the thought you apply to them both.

I think I went bald from scratching my head wondering why people insist on someone else telling them what is "the best". What is "the best" for me and my uses may not even be suitable for you and your uses.

Break free from the chains of predetermined edge angles! Learn the art of freehand and experimentation! Find your "zen" or whatever by finding out what works best for you, because down that way true madness lies. I mean happiness. Yeah, happiness!

there's no one size fits all answer based on steel alone.

even if all the blades were the same size, grind, blade angle etc., it would come down to intended purpose.

say you have a 440C, H1, S90V, D2 and K390 Military. All ground exactly the same.

Which edge angle and grit finish is best for each version?

That depends on how you intend to use it.

Do you think that a lot of dissatisfaction with knives is due to the lack of knowledge on the steels and how to sharpen them? Maybe 1% of people know what they are doing and a general A-Z guide based on steel composition may help them on their way to a greater appreciation and use of their knives. Amiright?

Most people just don't know how to sharpen period. A knowledge of how to sharpen, regardless of specific grits or angles, is a cure to much ailment when it comes to knives.

Just getting people to use something basic (but good) like a Sharpmaker properly is a huge step forward.
