Traveling abroad with a Bill Moran Featherweight

#1

Post by paco »

I am traveling to Costa Rica with a

Bill Moran Featherweight in my luggage. It is legal, or it can be trouble?

And what about carrying a CoPilot on my handbag while flying?

<grins> I can answer you luggage problem but not your carry on problem.

I've carried antique swords in my luggage from England to the US. I'm sure that a knife in the luggage isn't a big deal. If you feel apprehensive about it, mention it to the person taking your bag in the foyer. I generally don't bother.

As for the carry on question, I too would like to know the answer. Anyone have any idea? The obvious thing to me would be only carrying a SpyderCard. No problems there. (Course I'm assuming you (as I) don't have that luxury.

I've flown many miles with and without my Spydercos. I've found that the general rule of carry on is that if the blade is smaller than the width of "a" palm, then it's okay. This is rather arbitrary, as each security officer's palm is different. I've found that all security officers are scared of the serrated edge, no matter the size. I've carried my small dyad with me, but have even had problems with that. I don't like to have any seat belt on me without a knife handly to cut it if the need arises (knock on wood). My rescue has made it on board American flights, but not Delta or United. I suggest a small blade to carry on, but check to others in your luggage. I wouldn't advise that to the check in guy - he'll just try ot get it declared to cover his own butt. As long as it's not a firearm, you're good. Always be wary, however, when flying into less reputable airports (such as small countries). The baggage handlers are not always the most honest folks in the world, and they figure you won't miss your valuables until it's too late! Just a word of caution! Good luck!

Contact the airlines and ask them directly as the FAA regulations (4inch blade or less) can be further tightened by individual airlines.

I've lost a glowstick(military issue) in Toronto airport...
I was on a scout trip and we hit the airport. It was in my carryon, since I didn't want it smashed around in baggage, and it got taken for "unknown chemicals", even though it was in the package. I heard later that the security person was going to use it on thier trip next weekend with girl-guides...

I haven't had any problems with a 3" knife at secuity. I had a 3 3/4" blade, my old one, on my belt. I hit security and pulled it out of the sheath, put it in the tray and had no problems.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

I've heard in a round about way that Sal holds the record for most knives carried onto a plane. If my memory serves me right it was 15 or 16.

A flying Moran! *hee-hee!* Cool! Bet you'll have plenty of use for this nippy camp blade in Costa Rica dude!! I've flown from NY to Malaysia with heaps of Spydies and a fixed blade Emerson in my check-in luggage.. No problems! Only a small glitch at the LAX enroute to Pheonix, the security scanned my Endura in my hand-carry luggage... Held up the queue but was let off because the blade is legal limit!

I tried flying out of LAX to Sydney, OZ on United. I had a serr. CoPilot that I was carrying with me on the plane but the security guard would not allow me to take it along. I was forced to go back to the United counter where they placed my CoPilot in a 6" square box and checked it in as luggage.
When I arrived in Sydney the box came down, ripped open and empty. I then wasted an hour and a half filling out a lost property form and in the end United said I could take a check for $30 or nothing. I took the check and will never fly United again, for any reason.

If you are going to bring a Spydie on-board, make sure it is a plain blade and small. Something like the Navagator or Dragonfly works well, especially if you place it on your key ring when checking through security.
Once you are in the clear, slide it off the key ring and clip it back on the pocket where it belongs.
As for the Moran, if its packed I doubt you'll have any trouble.

Have a great trip Paco!
