Paysan?

#1

Post by Sharp Guy »

I'm seeing comments around the web (FB, YT, etc) that the Paysan is discontinued. People are asking ridiculous prices for them. I know the Paysan wasn't on the 2021 disco'd list. Has anyone heard from any reliable source (Spyderco) that the Paysan is officially discontinued or that (unofficially) there won't be any more runs made for some reason? In general, the discontinued list comes out toward the end of the year and, as far as I know, that's really the only time we get official word that a model is discontinued. So I'm curious why people are assuming the Paysan is discontinued

Now I'm kind of wishing I would've went for two but I didn't want to be a pig lol. A guy on FB is asking $800 for one. Another guy has his at $600. That one's probably gone by now

I had mine out last night and it won't be for sale any time soon. I like the knife too much

I've seen a number of people assume many different knives are discontinued because they're currently backordered. There was a youtuber (Same one from the controversy recently discussed here) who made that video about the Gayle Bradley 2 being discontinued, causing a lot of confusion. Of course, it was only backordered and did come back in stock.

On the Paysan, I'm going to guess it is a similar situation. It has been backordered for a while (like many other models) so the assumption that it was discontinued rises and spreads.

Thats my hope at least because I would still like another chance to score one at a reasonable price. (MAP) I will not resort to the secondary market. (SCAM)

I really want a Paysan or Nirvana to compare to a Sebenza... Spydie hole is my preference over thumb studs

The rumor I heard was that there was a Paysan at the blade show booth with an improved detent, hinting at a future batch to be released.

Same here, after handling and loving my CRK's, I've also had my eye out for both of these models.

The GB2 debacle is what I've been thinking of when I see people saying the Paysan's discontinued. I have my GB2 from the last run in my pocket today btw 🙂 I'm pretty sure you're right about the Paysan just waiting on another production run is what I was figuring too

The same thing happened to a much lesser degree with the Schempp Bowie. People were listing used ones on eBay for like $300 saying it was discontinued. In the end patience won out.

I don't know about the Nirvana but I'm not sure the Paysan is really comparable with the Seb. They're alike in some ways but really different in others. The Paysan is so blade heavy it's kind of goofy but in a good way. The action on mine is great. In fact last night I saw that there's Taco bearings that fit the Paysan. I wondered why anyone would want that big blade to swing more freely than it already does?

So the Paysan is more like the Umnumzaan? As far as wanting the Paysan to swing more freely, 1 word... Amputation. :winking-tongue

Thanks! That's the kind of info I was looking for. Interesting about the improved detent. I'm lucky that the detent on my factory second is actually pretty strong. The Paysan is definitely one that needs a strong detent to hold that blade securely. Brian Lai recently posted that the latest batch of Amalgams have an improved detent. Maybe they're finally working with the Taichung plant to finally improve the detents on the models coming out of there. Now everyone will start referring to these latest runs as the Amalgam CQI and Paysan CQI 😉

I haven't gone down the CRK path like some of you have. So I wouldn't know about the Umnumzaan other than it looks like a heavy knife. Thing about the Paysan is the integral handle has a small girth. So with that big blade it's kind of a weird combination but, at least for me, they work really well together. As I've said in other posts, the Paysan's blade is pretty thick. So it's not exactly the best slicer. Doesn't matter to me. As long as it's sharp it does what I need it do. I whittled some wood with mine last night and no issue doing that.

...and about the free swinging blade. It's already a guillotine. No need that I can see to make it worse

I really do recommend trying the Paysan if you get the chance. It's a great blade IMO

Paysan pic just for fun...

Oh, wow that is great news. Making an excellent knife (Amlagam) just about perfect. Improved detents across the Taichung line up is much needed and much appreciated. :bug-red-white

Agreed! I have a GB2 from the last run on me today. Despite what I said early on about the detent being acceptable I'll be doing the detent mod on it soon

But that youtuber got his information from another youtuber... No one bothered to ask Spyderco.

As for the paysan... I know where one is, but I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on it or the drunken..
Sweet knives though!

Two seconds sales ago I found a few paysan’s and played with them for a couple minutes. Nice actions with marginal lock stick. Unfortunately they didn’t feel $320 worth of good in the hand. It was a cool knife and nice design but it just didn’t fit.
