Dipped Spyderco in rust converter

#1

Post by gachub »

Hello everyone,
I got into knives recently with a beautiful Spyderco Chaparral Carbon fiber. Didn't really treat it properly and got some light rusting on the handle underneath the carbon(which I removed together with all the small bits) and a few tiny spots on the blade. Tonight I decided to do something about it and without any research I dipped it in some rust converter (thinking: it works fine on a car, so..), some time later it hit me, I use that knife mainly for cutting food! Approximately 15-30 minutes later I dried it with a paper towel, cleaned most of the rust with a fine wire brush, washed the parts and then dipped them in something that's not toxic - vinegar. Now, my question for you guys might be a bit stupid but I am genuinely asking if it's okay to wash the knife and continue chopping food with it, considering I dipped it in the very toxic rust converter or should I limit it's use to strictly package opening ?

Welcome!

I'n no expert, so don't take this as gospel, but if the blade is throughly cleaned the toxic converter should have been removed from the blade. You could call or email the company who makes the rust converter and ask them for advice.

If you clean it thoroughly you should be just fine. It's not like it is going to soak in and become part of the metal.

Of course, if it kills you, get someone to let us know. :grin-squint

I wouldn't trust a wire brush to get it all off unless you really went to town to the point you basically removed the whole top layer of metal. If it's a rust preventative, that means it's designed to stick to the metal. And if it's "very toxic" as you say, I don't think I'd ever use it again for food prep.

You could try the manufacturer to see if there's a neutralizing agent they recommend. Honestly their advice is the much better choice than the forum anyway.

What is the product called? You could Google to see if it can be used on kitchen knives. I'm curious as well.

Thank you all for replying so fast! I emailed the company that makes the rust converter just now and I will post an update when they answer.

Here is the LINK. It's a product made within my country it turns out. Sadly not much info on it online.

Description: Made on the basis of demineralized water, phosphoric acid and dye E102.
Sounds like Coca Cola. Disgusting non sweetened neon green Coca Cola.
I think you're over thinking it. You've already cleaned it off then dipped it in vinegar. That's one or two more steps than i would have done. :savouring

The metal is non porous so if you have washed it it’s fine.

Have used a camp stove in a pinch as a bucket for everything from hydraulic fluid to diesel over the years and cook with it to this day.

Did you try searching for the Safety data sheet for the rust remover? There’s supposed to be a sheet for everything in use in the US because OSHA I think. All the ones that I need are online at work (not a sophisticated in house techno wonder system). The data sheet or MSDS shouldn’t be too hard to find and would have good information on it. Sounds like you cleaned it well enough to me but confirmation would be reassuring.

Well, if there is too much fear, I guess you had better mail the knife to me for proper disposal.

Now that is just interesting. I had no idea molasses would take off rust. Thanks.
