Just added to collection. Took me forever to find a pristine sample.

This is such an early Spyderco model that steel type was not marked on the blade.

As a guy who's spend a bit of time in and under water, I wonder what the features/functions of the knife are?

Very distinct "hump" around the thumb hole.
Also, I find it interesting that a lot of the "old school" models are oriented for tip down carry, and wonder if there's a reason for it - or - that's just the way things started, and evolved from there.

wow...
Are my eyes playing tricks on me looking at the photos, or
Is that a big ole' space/gap Under the lock bar, but above the handle?

Is that a feature? a flaw? just how they were/are?

Not a flaw. Just how Sal designed the knife.

There is nothing on Spydiewiki about this knife except to say there is no page and it does not follow the normal sku system.

Any ideas what that slot on the showside of the handle might be for? Perhaps it should make cleaning the knife easier? (Don't think it's there for weight reduction)

Is it for undoing tight shackles, similar to the Atlantic?

I believe the slot in the handle is a vent to help in drying the knife. My Mariner has a drying vent cut out that is shaped like a shackle key. I used it multiple times to break shackles loose.

The original ClipIt patented concept was to orient the knife with the tip down. This allows for faster, more efficient, and ergonomic (less handle manipulation) one-hand opening method (Spydie Drop) by grabbing the hole (lobe) between the thumb and forefinger and then swinging (dropping) the handle down, thus opening the knife with the handle positioned in your hand with the knife ready to use. Also note the unique three-screw pocket clip that is very similar to the original two-screw pocket clip found on the first ClipIt, the C01 Worker.

Another question might be why did Spyderco switch from two screws in their pocket clip to three? ;)

This is a 1998 knife, article 2001. There were also diving knives similar to it (the knives are not mine, the photos are not mine):

and 2003 Mini Probe

This is how the lanyard with a wrist loop was attached

Love these old SS spydies with all the odd swedges and milled in features. Super interesting stuff.

And this is absolutely incredible

It’s a drying slot as well as a means to clean the knife.
