This is from the flow of consciousness on the ulu thread. The Patu I think would make a great addition to the ethnic series of knives. I am thinking on making a “Trainer” for obvious reasons lol (see the second video)
Pounamu in New Zealand to the Maori people aka nephrite jade is made into war clubs/knives. I think a Maori Patu style knife would be an amazing knife. Worthy of the ethnic series!
The tip is thinner for slicing but the edges are blunt for blows but this could be used like a machete/axe like tool.
I will have to make one and see how it works.
Thoughts?

Is it a club, or a knife? Reminds me of a cricket bat!
It is both, but there are a few different styles that are thinner as well.
In steel, I see it as around 1/4” paddle that is blunter like an axe on the edge or edges and thinner at the tip for short versions and the larger or longer versions being about 3/16ths or 1/8”.

As a user it seems like a simple club to me and I have some that fulfill that function perfectly for a twentieth of what a Patu Spyderco would cost. And as a collector's item I find it .... how to say it? .... ugly.
However, if Spyderco decides to start with the club-like knives (wood or plastic clubs with a single or multiple steel edges) in their ethnic series I would suggest the Aztec macuahuitl:
"The tip is thinner for slicing..." What tip? :D LOL It looks like a canoe paddle.
I would need a bit more proof of concept that something like this can be translated into a modern knife design. Until then, this idea seems a little bit too farfetched for me personally.
The concept was to use the Patu for inspiration and not be a replica, so it would not be for pure blows as a knife or at least not on both sides if it had an axe like edge with a thick stock, that would be all it would need. A machete tends to have a relatively obtuse edge but they work great. It would in a sense have a similar cutting profile of the kukri but without a pointed tip.
