I Made a Lil Native Salt with the Rocks glass

#1

Post by Candyman »

So I did it! I finally broke one of my Spyderco Rocks glass to make a Lil Native Salt! I broke the glass, used a heat gun to get the glue off and cleaned the rest with goo gone. Then washed the blade and swapped it. From there I took it to Blade show and had the Ken Onion sharpener rep use their machine to put a proper edge on it. Only took him about 5 minutes to put a edge on it. Sal inspected it with the jewelers loupe and said it looked great. Attached I have the video of me breaking the glass, it being sharpened and then the finished results. It was a lot of fun to do! Now let’s hope the YouTube video link and pictures work.

That is very cool! I would have guessed that blade would have been not have been hardened.

I was just going to say the same thing.

Sal said it was good to go? That's awesome if so! Call me amazed if those blades in those glasses are actually heat treated!

Back when the Rocks Glass was first announced, I mentioned something about the blades looking almost fully finished, minus an edge and if I am remembering correctly, Kristi confirmed that they are in fact fully finished, heat treated, and usable. (Except that they're embedded in a glass and lacking an edge, of course)

I think this is the first I've seen of somebody actually going through with it. Nice work Rich!
In the Benshot thread somebody asked if they were heat treated and somebody else said probably not. Sal responded with, "They are a functional blade."

Like others I assumed there was no HT. Tip of the hat for pulling it off and beating the rest of us to the punch. Please keep us posted with impressions.

Sweet. Congrats. Better yet, getting Sal to pronounce that the edge was great.

That’s super cool!

Would ungluing the LC200N blade without breaking the glass be feasible? That way, you could just glue in the leftover S30V blade and still be able to enjoy a drink from it after the swap.
Have: old S30V Native, HAP40 Endura, ZDP DF2, S110V Manix LW, Cru-wear Para 3, SE H1 DF2, S90V Native 5, K390 Urban, SE Pac Salt, P.I.T.S., XHP Manix LW, SB Caly 3, B70P, PMA11, K03, Kapara, REX 45 Military, 154CM Manix LW, Swick, AEB-L Urban, KC Cruwear Manix, M390 PM2, Mantra 2, CruCarta Shaman, M390 Manix, K390 Police 4, S90V Manix LW, Rex 45 Manix LW, 20CV Manix, Rex 45 Lil’Native, Shaman, C208GP, Cruwear Manix, Cruwear Manix, M4 Chief, Z-max!!!

Looking back on it I definitely could have tried that first. I honestly wasn’t even thinking I’d need to use heat as I thought it was just stuck into the glass. Once it broke I realized there was glue. It’d be worth a shot!

No idea what the adhesive is but I would try soaking in acetone first.

I would love to know why LC200N Lil Natives were never released outside of the glasses.
