My K390 Love Affair/Sal Request

#1

Post by DFD04 »

I was blessed this year with some birthday cash that I promptly took to the SFO and plunked down for a P4 in K390. After hearing so much here about this steel I had to try it out and do my best to push it cutting as much stuff as I could to try and dull it.

I started by dropping it to around 13 degrees per side on the Edge Pro. The standard stones were fine with this steel, but they took a bit of a beating trying to drop the angle. I used the 6k tapes and got a pretty good mirror finish (not the best I’ve ever done, but it was good).

I have had this knife with me to cut anything and everything. It’s shredded boxes, old leather, old running shoes, and after a month and a half of trying to punish the edge, I was able to shave a bit of arm hair with no razor burn today.

I’m probably the most impressed with K390 as I’ve ever been with any other steel. The steel was not overly hard to reprofile and it has held up a shaving sharp edge longer under hard use than anything else I’ve had. Well done Spyderco and crew.

I’d like to get some old fire hose and let it chew on that—but if the shoes and leather were any indication—it’ll be just fine.

I would humble request a K390 Shaman sprint run, please. I’d really like to see this steel in a heavy folder like the Shaman if at all possible. It would be awesome to see a PE and SE brother and sister version.

Here are some bad pics of the knife I took this afternoon.

With Green Canvas Micarta, pretty please.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I would be very surprised if there were not already a K390 Shaman (in some form or other) commissioned by a retailer and waiting its turn in the queue.

There has been a k390 pm2 and a cpm 10v pm2, so I guess both of those steels could happen with other US models.

K390 has the best edge holding out of any steel I've used. Very impressed with it.

Personally I'd like to see a small K390 fixed blade. Street Beat would work.

I don’t really want to see a given steel in every model, but I’ll surely jump on K390 if it comes out in a model compelling to me. I have found the Urban, G10 Police4, and PM2 compelling.

K390 is my favorite!
I would love a K390 Shaman even if it didn't have micarta scales. It should have micarta scales though. :spyder:

There's room for more!

It would be awesome to have a regular production Shaman in K390!

But given how most production K390s are from Seki, looks like it would be a long shot...

The most probable way for a K390 Shaman to be produced is thru BBS (which brings out some sort of problems on its own for some people...)

That would be an insta-buy for me. Same goes for a kapara or p3lw in k390. Hope they don’t do them all at the same time :D

I’d definitely hop on the k390 shaman train but my preference would be manix 2 in k390 blue g10 or (dreaming) blue micarta. Both knives are fantastic but the manix is my favorite.

The green canvas micarta would be a huge bonus!!

Years ago the military was a knife that was a test bed for all kinds of new steels…I’m hoping the Shaman can be added to that category.

The idea of a fixed blade in k390 is also super exciting. I would be all over that.

In the end—I’ve never had a steel that I felt truly could do everything I want it to do. Bravo spyderco for how you’ve handled this thus far.

Yup—saw your thread—I think it would be great.

I’d selfishly like a jump master 1 in the sheepsfoot…but I’m curious either way what this steel would look like riding in a sheath and getting exposed to water regularly would look like.

This is the have your cake and eat it too premise…edge retention and rust resistance of LC200N.

Please stop by and leave that comment! Every little bit helps Sal and Eric make a decision on the model.

I love K390. I'd love to see a shaman in it too, and a fixed blade like the Street Beat. But if we're talking wishful thinking, I'd like to see a Spyderco Military fixed blade in K390.

Agreed 100%

I too have had my fingers crossed hoping we would see a PE & SE K390 Shaman, I think it's safe to say they would 'probably' sell fairly well... :p ;) :D

Cheers,

John

[edit: add sentence]

...while we are on the subject of K390, SE in particular, can we *PLEASE* have a FFG PE & SE Manix2 -- the Manix line needs at least one SE model desperately IMO. :D

I'd buy a k390 shaman. Or a military. And either one in LC200N while we're at it!

I would purchase two Military models in K390 immediately.

Wonderful steel in the FRN Seki-City models, I also have two PM2 in K390.

FK
