Sharpening a Matriarch 2? Best Spyderco Brand tool?

#1

Post by Seven7VII »

Greetings all,

I looked through the threads already, but I would appreciate a personal response.

I just bought my first Syderco the other day. I chose the Matriarch 2. I will be obtaining a Civilian and a Police model in short order.

What is the best tool made by Spyderco to sharpen the serrations on the Matriarch? Will the sharpmaker work?

Thanks in advance!

The Sharpmaker is what you need. It's simple and very effective.

I'll echo what Meatman said, the Spyderco sharp maker is a essential sharpener, especially to new comers to different blade and edge types.
One of the best investments ive made and its not expensive.

Yep, yep, and yep, the sharpmaker is fantastic for serrated edges, it's all I've ever used on my Matriarch family of Spydies, I'd recommend starting/practicing on a cheap plain edge first, then a cheap serrated edge, there are loads of great videos out there (and here too)

Ive always used the Sharpmaker rods to maintain my serrated edge blades. The corners of the triangle stones work great, just be patient, take your time, and be sure to work the burr off of the flat side of the blade to keep the edge clean after you work the teeth back sharp.

The Doublestuff 2 and Goldenstone also work well for sharpening serrated edges.

The Sharpmaker will work perfectly! In fact, in my experience sharpening serrations is even easier than plain edge with the sharpmaker.
Take a look at this great thread (very first post and vid there) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=84544 and of course the DVD that comes with the sharpmaker (here it is on youtube https://youtu.be/5LBDnJv5B58&t=24s, sharpening SE starts at 19:23, but I´d really watch from the beginning of the vid)
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)
