Which coatings are best for corrosion resistance?

Post by Abyss_Fish »

I wasn’t sure weather this belongs in off topic or the main forum since spyderco does use a few of these. I figure I’ll but it here just in case.

Soooo as the title says. What’s the best? I wanted to coat the metal parts (at least on the handle) on my g10 native, as they’ve got some corrosion problems. The blade is lc200n (from a blade swap) so I figure it should be as watertight as possible.

My first choice was dlc. As it’s very thin and very tough. But the more I read the more I find it’s somewhat porous. So unless there’s some magical treatment I can do to keep it watertight that’s out. TiCN is (to my understanding) watertight. But it’s very easy to scratch off and kinda hard to get done... (promising edit!: turns out there’s a company near to me who does Ticn as well as some other fun coatings! So this one’s back on the table!) And then there’s ceracoating. I could literally drive 5 minutes into the city and get this done, and I’m sure you could too. It’s everywhere. But it’s brittle, and a little on the thick side. And I don’t really know much about it.

I really am just generally uninformed. I would really like to waterproof my native. I mean, I’d like a Native salt g10. But UNTIL THEN. I’d really like this done.

Any info you guy’s have helps. Thanks much.
Lightly insane.

I did research (Googling) for the best coatings and never found anything. I did research (Googling) on lubricants and found a few interesting things, but some of the chemicals might be dangerous to handle long term. Stuff like Mil Spec Cosmoline might not be of interest to anyone...they like to handle and use their knives.

Your best bet is to get a near stainless or stainless steel and have it coated if you like the look of coatings.

From everything that I've seen, there is no such thing as a non stainless steel coating that totally prevents rust/corrosion.

Some form of nitriding (Ferritic Nitrocarburizing) would be best, I believe. It works very well in the firearms world.

I'd like to try the following: "NP3+ has great corrosion resistance, a 1 mil (.001) coating exceeding a 960 hour salt spray test. Ten times that of Nickel Boron."

I've actually been thinking of sending some PD1 mules for coating, and I'm really interested in NP3. I have some NP3 on firearms and I've been very impressed with it.

I'm looking at getting a 2nd Spyderco Province in 4V. If it's possible, I'd like to sharpen the top swedge and get it coated in NP3+. Then resharpen. If I manage to do this in 2021, I'll be happy. I have not contacted anyone regarding the work, and I do not know if it is possible, so I have to see if the coating co will work with me and if NP3+ will work on 4V.

Some coatings do not work on some steels.

You are welcome!

I'm looking at the NP3+ for a few knives. Will get to them in 2021. Need the knives first. :D
