Changes to the Military

I just received one the latest release of the Spyderco Military and I am very impressed. The blade steel (S30V) and blade grinds are just perfect. The S30V steel holds a great edge and is very easy to sharpen. Is the heat treating done "in house" by Spyderco? The G-10 scales are thicker than the previous Militaries but do not add too much to the thickness of the knife. The difference is not noticeable in my pocket. I did notice that the pivot screw was changed from a fine thread pitch to a coarse pitch. I really liked the "older" design because it was much easier to adjust the blade tension exactly as I would like. Is the only difference of the pivot pin the pitch of the threads? If so I probably "swap out" the pivot pin with one from my older model Militaries. Thanks for the continual improvement to this excellent design.

I'm not sure about the threading, but the heat-treat on the 30V is done in-house.

By the time you read this, you'll have already read it.

Just for a follow up I compared the pivot pin on the S30V Military to the older Military design. The eccentric pivot pin has been replaced with a nonadjustable pivot pin. It appears that the adjustable pivot was not necessary as the radiused ramp on the blade would compensate for any wear on the lock. As well made as this knife is I can say that I never had to adjust the lock on any of the Militaries that I have owned (6 so far). One thing I would have preferred is that the new pivot continued the use of the Torix fastener. I inadvertently rounded out the allen wrench hole on the newer pivot screw. It was entirely my fault not a design problem, but it would not have happened with the Torix screwhead. I called Customer Service and they told me that a new one would be sent to me no charge even though I offered to pay for it. Thanks again Spydeco
