Spyderco vx SOG
Spyderco vx SOG
I will be buying a new knife and I wonder if anyone could give me their opinion of the SOG "TOMCAT" - what would an equivalent Spyderco knife be - the "Native" or perhaps the "Endura"? I heard that the "Tomcat" won the kinfe of the year award a few years back and I'm wondering if it really is that great a knife for the money?

I'm not sure there's a direct equivalent to the Tomcat in the Spyderco line. The Tomcat is a big, heavy folder. The Tomcat is a large, bolstered lockback. Spyderco's approach to hard-use folders tends to be a bit more high-speed/low-drag.
If you're looking specifically for a lockback like the Tomcat, the nearest Spyderco is probably something like the Police. The police has some weight to it, like the Tomcat. The Chinook is a hand-filling lockback that can be considered Tomcat-ish in that way, although the blade format looks to be more designed for defensive use than the Tomcat's (I'm referring to what appears to be the Chinook's very sharp point).

Don't get me wrong, I really like my spyders alot ,but the Tom Cat is one heck of a knife. The blade is .200 inch thick and the knife is built like a truck, it also weighs like a truck. The belt case (horizontal or vertical) is the only way to carry it. Sog knifes are a well made as Spyderco's. Get the Sog,you won't be sorry, just like getting a new Spyder, cn never have enough.
