Post by Naperville »

Just bought a Spyderco Jumpmaster 2, Fixed 4.5" H1 Serrated Leaf-Shaped Blade, Black FRN Handles and I hope that Sal wants to make one in LC200N! :D

Come on Sal... you know that you want to do it!

FFG? The serrations are what make it cut.

Then why do you want LC200N? Sal has stated here that nothing comes close to H1 in edge retention when it's serrated. H1 is also more corrosion resistant than LC200N. LC200N offers near H1 level corrosion resistance, but much better edge retention in plain edge. There's no reason I know of to switch from H1 to LC200N in a serrated edge.

Please no.

Leave the Jumpmaster in H-1, with serrations.

there was a Japan exclusive PE Jumpmaster, it would be neat to see it FFG and LC200N,
for my SE Jumpmaster though, I will keep the H1 steel thanks much

My request was based on the video and basic knowledge of H1, LC and S110V. If the Jumpmaster 2 cuts well with H1, then it may cut better with a harder steel with better edge retention such as LC or S110V. I don't need the corrosion resistance at this time, but I sure would love to have the best cutting knife that could be made.

What you're missing is that H1 work hardens in a way that other steels don't. That's why serrated H1 has far better edge retention than plain edge H1. It's also why (or a part of why) serrated H1 has far better edge retention than other steels when they're serrated. Sal has written on this forum that serrated H1 outperforms every other steel Spyderco has tested when comparing serrated to serrated. H1 literally transforms from barely acceptable edge retention in plain edge, to outperforming every other steel available when serrations are ground in. It's a fascinating steel. Switching to any other steel will not increase cutting performance over H1 when comparing serrated to serrated.

Although I missed Sal's post, I could see that H1 was undergoing hardening when serrations were being applied. The video from Eric said it hit 60 to 67HRC, which is quite good. My only problem is when I sharpen the serrations on the current Jumpmaster 2 with H1 I do not have industrial systems to impart the serrations creating the hardening process, and they are bound to be in the low 50 HRC, hence my request for a better steel like S110V.

I've wanted a large knife in 3V, M390 or S110V with serrations for well over a year now. I have $15,000 invested in my knife collection. I contacted Mr Tom Veff for serrations on a Bark River Knives Bravo III, in 3V. It is a big 11 inch blade. Apparently he was miffed at me for asking abt placing serrations on 100% of the blade because he stopped communicating with me after I sent him pictures of the brand spanking new knife that I wanted serrations on.

It is just my opinion, but a larger serrated knife in a high end steel, 3, 5, 7, 9 inches long with serrations would change the knife industry as we know it.

Maybe we could get @sal to weigh in on this.

That's an interesting point. It makes me wonder how deep into the steel the work hardening of H1 goes, and how long it would take to sharpen through it by doing end user touch ups. Perhaps another thing for Sal to weigh in on. Given your budget, I can't help but think that you could find a machinist to fabricate a horizontal clamp for you to use in place of the vertical clamp on a chainsaw blade grinder type sharpener like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y0S88Y8/. That would solve your lack of industrial sharpening equipment.

That's unfortunate. I hope you can find someone else to do the work for you.

I've never seen a saw like that before. It looks fantastic. I'm OK with power tools, but I'd rather pay somebody who is an expert to do the work so that the blade is not messed up. I don't think I'm quite up to the challenge.
