Lubrication

#1

Post by Neophyte »

Dear All,

The time has come to lubricate my favourite knife, the Endura FRN. Unfortunately I don't know how to go about it. I know I should use oil or silicone, as the Edge-U-Cation page says. However I carry my knife in my pocket and am concerned about getting lubricant on my clothes. Is this a problem? How much lubricant should I use? I am leaning somewhat towards silicon rather than oil. Any comments?

I use Tuf-Glide by Sentry Solutions. The liquid carrier solution evaporates leaving a basically dry film. I use it on all metal products to include my Road King.

Howdy Budman! Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Land! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I would suggest just the tiniest drop of oil. I lube all my knives thins way, and have yet to get an oilstain in a pocket.

Never underestimate the impossible.

I've recently converted to Militec-1. I've used a number of different lubes, and this is the only one that doesn't like to collect lint and is still non-toxic.

couple drops, blowdryer to heat it up, let it sit overnight(after working it in a bit), and work it through in the morning

I think you better read the fine print on that Militec Vox. I recently came across a potion called Nut Sauce. Its made to lube guitar tuning nuts. It contains graphite suspended in a low to mid weight teflon grease. A very small bit, worked in with the heat of a hair dryer, works wonders on folders.

And another recommendation for Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide. It's the only stuff that I use on my <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>s. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

just to confuse you a little bit more i use rem oil. it works well, sold at walmart, and doesnt cost an arm and a leg. a little tiny bottle will last you for a LOOOONG time. get the one with the long tooby aplicator dealy and just put a drop on both sides of the pivot. work it in by opening and closing knife. wipe off any excess oil on blade. one note though, it is not suggested that you use it on food, so unless you enjoy seeing the local mortican i would suggest to not use it on cooking knives

The SFO here in Colorado reccomended Ballistol, which I have used...smells funky, but the steel seems to love it...comments?

I have tried Ballistol, Rem-oil, and Militec-1. The Rem-oil did not last long enough and I couldn't get over the smell of the Ballistol. Sorry transistor, I have never heard of Nut Sauce, not too sure about that one.

Militec-1 gets my vote, especially after that third application. In fact I just bought some more.
