Black Blade Enduras

#1

Post by Tengu 54 »

I remember seeing some Enduras and Delicas with black coated blades. I was wondering were these knives popular? Were they offered with FRN handles? Could I ask for an Endura with a SE black coated blade and a G-10 handle sometime please?

Welcome aboard, Tengu! Good idea, but make mine with the old molded style clip, but with the new VG-10 steel. RKBA!

Welcome aboard. The black bladed Enduras (and Delicas) are discontinued Yet some may still be found. Bladeart.com also has some black Delicas available

Tengu 54,
Welcome to the Spydie forum!!!
I just saw a black Endura over on Ebay.
If you want a black blade and G10 handle these days, you need a Spyderco Bob Lum Tanto folder.

THE black coated delicas and enduras were offered years ago, probibly 5-8 years ago if I remember correctly, they hade G2 blade steel or as it is called today GIN-1. This was before the switch to AUS-8A in these models and they hade molded pocket clips. The models then were switched to ATS-55 steel and were redesigned with the steel cilp, and have recently been switched to VG-10 steel and somewere in between they had the BOYE lock bar detent added. The the model you are looking for is a first generation endura and is probibly pretty hard to fine in good shape, however, I know someone who has a delica full serrated with black blade, G-2 steel and molded pocket cilp.

My first post here, so please be gentle.

I came to this forum hoping to find one or two of the black blade Enduras.

In 1996 I bought 6 of them, and a Delica. They were wedding presents for me and my groomsmen, the Delica was for my wife. I still have mine, but it is very worn. Mine all had a Zytel (I believe) handle with the full plastic clip and an AUS-8A stainless blade. The black nitirde coating caused corrosion between the coating and the blade, which is why they were discontinued. Of the lot I bought, only my brother's corroded.

I bought them from Smoky Mountain Knife works in March, April or May of 1996. They had already been discontinued by Spyderco at that point.

Anyways, daily use for 10 years has broke the tip, removed nearly all the serrations, just about worn the letters of the clip, and most of the black coating on the blade is gone. The clip is intact, despite severely catching it several times.

The wife just bought me a stainless steel Endura for our anniversary, so I am sending mine in to the factory to get the blade refreshed.

Despite never (or rarely) using them, none of my groomsmen will sell theirs back to me, and my wife lost the Delica. So if any of you have a very good used (can still feel the sharp edges on the waffle pattern ) Endura or Delica, or even better, New Old Stock, I would love to buy it from you. Believe it or not, my wife would be thrilled to get her Delica back as well!

I hope someone out there has one!

-Rob

P.S. - My first was the Olive Drab zytel with the mirror polish blade. It was stolen from a locked, checked bag at the new Denver airport in 1995. So, if you're the guy that stole my first Spyderco knife, e-mail me and I'll buy it from you! 8-)
