Photo hosting sites

#1

Post by bearfacedkiller »

Hey guys, it seems as though quite a few of us are now looking for a new option to host our pictures. I wanted to get a discussion going about what sites people are currently using or switching to and why. I would like everyone's opinion, not just the folks who are leaving photobucket. I still am not sure what to do so I just want to hear what others think. Let me hear it. :)

I've been using imgur.com.

I think it was made to host pictures for reddit, which is a big, crazy forum type thing.

I generally use tinypic.com and imgbb.com. I've never felt like creating an account or maintaining an online library of content, which I guess turned out good for me with the Photobucket fiasco.

A word of caution on Imgur, from their terms of service:
Stuff not to do
If someone else might own the copyright to it, don't upload it. Don't upload gore, "hate speech" (i.e. demeaning race, gender, age, religious or sexual orientation, etc.), or material that is threatening, harassing, defamatory, or that encourages violence or crime. Don't upload illegal content such as child porn or nonconsensual ("revenge") porn. Don't hotlink to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent, warez, or Imgur rip-off sites. Don't impersonate someone else. Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. We mean it.

I think the Imgur Terms of Service refer mainly to illegal activities, etc.

If you notice when you upload a picture to Imgur, they give you Share Options which include the BBCode (Forums) link for the picture. If they didn't allow posting the pictures to forums, they wouldn't give you the link.

You may not have found the Share Options on the Imgur interface, but it's hiding there. It goes away after you finish the upload procedure, so look for it.

example of BBCode from Imgur. If you quote this post, you'll see the code in the editor.

Someone mentioned https://imgtc.com/

I have not tried it, yet.

I don't use them and never tried, just passing along something I read elsewhere and verified at the source.

We can all speculate on the intent and whether they mean illegal activities or 3rd party hosting for commercial use or whether they'd ever actually enforce it on casual users, but what it says is pretty unambiguous imo.

If you let the Terms of Service scare you away, you're no better off than if you were banned.

How many pages is Apple's Terms of Service up to these days ?

Bottom line: Imgur has been working for people who keep it in reason.

The reason I stayed with PB for so long was that I believed they were gonna be an option forever. Their quality had gone done a lot and I had thought about leaving but I was heavily invested in them and I figured that even though they were a pain to use that they would at least still always be there since they were large, established and popular.

Imgur's terms of service are enough to keep me away. It sounds like they could pull the plug on me at anytime if they wanted to. I am not interested in finding a new hosting site every couple of years.

I may be looking at paid sites. Hmmm......

If it does come to that I can guarantee you PB won't be getting my business. The way they've handled this is complete BS.

D, I agree completely.

It appears as though there are many sites that cost very little that are well liked. I have had smugmug recommended to me now a few times. It is $4 a month if you pay for an entire year and $6 if you pay monthly. That is a lot cheaper than $400!!!!! They have a 14 day free trial with no card needed. I may give it a go. Vivi, recommended imgtc.com and it is free. I still don't know what to do? My main concern is avoiding this happening again. All the broken links is a bummer and it is too much for me to fix. I don't want all my links broken again in a few years.

I hear ya. This has basically reset the forum/blog world. What really makes me angry are all the older pics in threads posted by members who don't even come around anymore.

I've never used it but I've seen others who have

https://postimages.org/

They have a few re-sizing options and lots of links for forums etc (e.g. thumbnail image or full image). Here's a quick one I just tried

Nice plethora of options presented -- and I want to thank all responding as well with further details.

I'm currently out there, twisting in the wind over my lack of a clear solution to my remaining Photobucket 'un- postables' as the only 3rd party hosting service I have experience with.

Being that I am at a relative disadvantage with no real obvious best course of action from here as far as I presently stand, I appreciate the alternatives presented here to start to look into more patiently and narrow down my choices.

I'm averse to a paid site, don't want a two to three- figure yearly bill from said hosts, and in understanding that I'm inadequately equipped as I ponder the quest of eventually finding the best of said alternatives for me personally.

But, as of now Photobucket has screwed up all my previous posting abilities of a sizeable library compiled over years, as have others, to include many blade pix from my collection posted here.

Being that I am not the most savvy end- user, such change is of personal consternation.
In wanting to gain the ability in landing the best suited from overall alternatives, I'm sick of procrastinating.

Gotta do something sooner than later from the here and now, so it is an undertaking that is meeting its time for 'the plunge'. I know this is not nearly as much of a challenge to many others in their resolution of tasks to their ultimate satisfaction.

So far I have ascertained the likelihood of long, labor- intensive uploads to a new (to me) 3rd party host, again once I am more confidently informed and as well confident in reaching the best suited option for my purposes.

I am no happy camper thus far, but I have not yet put a whole lot of effort in tackling this dilemma personally and effectively.

I must soon resolve my own mess as things presently stand, and follow through.

Color me frustrated; but this thread is a great start thus far, and any further input to help me along the way would be likewise greatly valued and appreciated.

Thanks for letting me vent.

For what it's worth, I've been dabbling with Imgur in the past few days and am pretty pleased with it so far. Very easy to use.

Sounds like as good place to start as any -- I'll take your advice and pursue this you've mentioned first, thanks buddy!

In reading back through this thread, I realize there is a good deal of useful input I had just read through once and didn't at the time retain in entirety the leads proffered by the members chiming in with valuable insight and knowledge too. Feeling like I'm building this up more than is necessary and reasonable. I hate computer dilemmas and conundrums which I struggle with at varying degrees of benefit and difficulty.

Thanks def. in order again, all! ;)

I'm an Imgur neophyte myself, but I'll try my best to help. :)

First, open the Imgur app on your iPhone and click on the "person" icon at the bottom right corner of your screen. If you've allowed Imgur access to your pictures from your phone, your personal albums/pictures should appear here.

Second, select the picture(s) you would like to upload.

Third, click on the "upload" icon at the top right corner of your screen. A pop-up box will appear from the bottom of your screen and you can then click the "copy link" icon.

Fourth, open the Spyderco forum page and then click on "post reply" on a thread. (Or you can also start a new thread as well). Click on the "image" icon (the little mountain) and it will drop the in your thread. From there, click on the area between [img]and[/img] and click "paste". Your picture *should* then post when you hit the submit button. This is how I did it, so hopefully it works okay for you too.
