Lansky dog bone sharpeners - Experiences?
I'd like to get one of those dog bones for my EDC bag. Now that I bought my first serrated knife (H1 ladybug), I saw that Lanksy offers one model made specifically for the Spyderedge. Do any of you have some experience with this model?

I have used one and to be honest they are a pain to use....Might I suggest for your EDC bag a small sharpener that not only can sharpen but also realign your edges, and does serrated knives in seconds. I use it to sharpen my ladybugs and all other serrated knives and Bowies and Hatchets etc.. The sharpener is called the "Block Sharpener" made here in the USA, there is a whole bunch of vids on You Tube and blocksharpener.net has a whole bunch more....may cost you a few dollars more but certainly worth the value.....Doc:)

I think I could root around in the crap here on my desk and find one of those. In fact, I think I have both the ceramic and diamond versions, although mine are older and the rubber ends look a bit different. Waste of money in my opinion.

I would suggest learning to sharpen serrations on a Sharpmaker. But, if you want a cheap alternative for getting into those teeth, this tapered diamond rod will do the trick. It will also destroy the shape of your serrations if you don't know what you're doing. Sharpmaker is best for serrations IMO.

I don't have the Lansky dog bone, but I have used the very similar Gatco Tri-Seps to touch up serrated edges. Just hold it between thumb and 3rd finger to do the scallops one at a time and then one quick pass on the other side to remove any burr. For a full-out sharpening, I use a combination of a DMT fine diamond tapered rod and the Sharpmaker.

Why would anyone want to sharpen a dog bone?

I have the "multi sharpener" version
It works, but it is pretty coarse (equal or coarser than the brown SM stones)
to throw in a bag so you never have a blunt knife, it works, but given the choice i would pick a SharpMaker every single time.

I like it. They make a,spyderco model.
Easy to fit in a pack.

I've had a few over the years. I've always thought they were pretty handy, even for their size. I tried talking Lansky into making a fine version of their Spyderco sharpener, but they wouldn't budge.
The only issue I've had with them (Lansky and GATCO) are the rubber/plastic end caps fall off pretty easily.

Thanks for the answers. Like I said, it's for the EDC bag and I definitely won't be hauling a sharpening system around with me.
Is the Gatco as coarse as the Lansky?

Can't speak to the Lansky, but the Gatco are the same as the Spyderco brown rods.
Re: Lansky dog bone sharpeners - Experiences?
I've got the dog bone that is triangular. It looks just like a shorter version of the sharpmaker. It's what I take with me on trips away from home. Small, very portable. You'll need to feel comfortable with freehanding the angle. If you've rolled your edge and need to get it sharp, it'll work. It'd be too annoying to use to fix edge chipping.
