Question on the SE ARK

#1

Post by jdw »

I am thinking of getting the SE ARK but some of the reviews that I have read on line really dislike the new sheath for having deployment
issues. Has anyone on the forum experienced this or is this just a few disgruntled buyers?
Do right always. It will give you satisfaction in life.

I do not have one, yet. However, I do have a knife that seems to have been partly the inspiration behind this knife. It deploys in the same manner and it is very secure. It is very fast to release, as well. I would not worry about it too much.

While I think Spyderco's sheath is a great solution, perhaps they should have put a slight rise on the scale just at the point where it ends and the blade begins. Then, a flared sheath could be made that would grip the knife so all one would have to do is pull straight out. Cold Steel does this with the Super Edge and it works very well.

I'd have to say it's just a few disgruntled buyers. Yes, the new sheath requires a little more dexterity (or two hands) to draw the knife. On the flip side of that, the new sheath offers the best retention of any kydex sheath I've handled, equaled only by Bob Dozier's neck knife sheath, which uses a thumb break.

More importantly, while the PE ARK is a cool little knife, the SE version hits the mark for everything this knife should be. You will not regret buying one.

There was no other knife that inspired this one.

I own a PE Ark and I have no issues with deployment. I press the tab with my index finger right before drawing the knife.

Returning the knife to the sheath is another story. Don't know what is is about the design but I've never had a fixed blade be more difficult to re-sheath. Mine has stayed in my drawer rather than seeing carry time for this reason, and will probably remain there until I find someone to make me a new sheath.

Retention is king with a neck knife for me. When the cqi sheath came out I bought one straight away and I love it.

Good to know. It looks similar to another knife and the sheath is about the same.

There are only so many blade shapes possible. I told Sam from the beginning that I wanted a deep choil for the first finger, a blade with continuous curve, and for the blade and handle to angle away from each other. The blade shape closest to what I initially imagined would probably be a Jester with more blade curvature. Of course, working with a partner results in an organic process. Happily, sometimes the end result is even better than the initial idea.

Just received my spyderedged ARK and I love it.It was a great idea to release a serrated version.I only wish it had a slightly longer handle.I was trained to use a knife in a reverse grip for self defense, in this case edge out, so I feel I don't have enough grip with such a small handle, but other than that it's a sweet blade.God job John Shirley !
