Trifecta of Guntings, and some questions

#1

Post by GoldenSpydie »

Well, I won an Ebay auction, and so I now have not one, but three Guntings, a knife I always thought looked stupid and which I never really wanted. It's interesting how things work out, isn't it? :)

I got this Gunting (440V, PE, silver clip) a few months ago.

Today, I got another 440V, PE Gunting, but this one has a black clip. I also received (same auction) a blue-handled CRMIPT Gunting which reads "LEO Only." Spydiewiki says that the blue one is "rare," but it doesn't say how rare or how many were made. Does anyone know? Also, would the black clipped Gunting or the silver clip be more desirable, or does it not matter?

Anyway, here are some pictures of the trifecta. I'm trying to figure out if I should sell one of the black Guntings...we'll have to see how it goes.

Any and all help is appreciated! :)

*low whistle*

That one fine trifecta, GS. Mighty fine. Dang. The Guntings are certainly hard to find, but I've seen fewer of the black-clipped models around, so I'm guessing they may be a bit more desirable amongst the collectors. I passed on many Guntings back when they were still fairly plentiful--mainly because they looked odd to me at the time. :( Hindsight and all. ;)

Congrats, GS! Enjoy those new beauties.

Thanks SpyderNut. Does anyone know how many CRMIPT Guntings were made?

I actually bought a black clip direct from spyderco a few yrs ago. They still had them in stock. I polished my original black clip and wanted a spare black one just in case. I think the S30V guntings are more rare than the 440V because they were made before production stopped. I could be wrong though. Still that blue one is pretty cool.

GS,
Sorry I don't know how many of the CRIMPTs were made. I've had 2. One had a messed up pivot(and hasn't been seen in years). They are not seen very often. I acquired my CRIMPT and the second Gunting I got in the deal was this orange one. Pretty sure the scales and serrations are custom. I believe there are only a few of these.
Enjoy

Thanks all.
Nice Guntings Boxer. I've seen a few mentions of the orange one on the Forum, and I seem to remember that the orange ones were indeed custom.

Man, they need to do a Gunting 2 that adds a flipper that sticks out as much as the the protuberance on the Gunting.

This and the Dodo I never really got. Definitely cool but as a user?

I've had several of the GUNTING models over the years>> but I've been told that the Holy Grail of the GUNTING model is the S30V version in full plain edge. I had a couple of people tell me that they only made about 100 of those. I believe it because I've personally only ever seen one PE, S30V Gunting in the past 10 years.

Yeah the Gunting Trainer would be great but if you could score a PE in S30V that would give you a super set for future investment.

Unfortunately there won't be a gunting 2. Bram has moved on and works with another company now. I do enjoy mine from time to time but it's not in my daily rotation.

the ramp is designed to be used as a less lethal tool - for striking (like a hammer, with a closed knife) for grabbing and locking (with the jimped ramp) and a kinetic opening, if you can open the knife with the ramp too, but it also normally results in the tip contacting the medium you are opening it with.

much of the knowledge about this tool will be locked up in various forumites heads, who may or may not still frequent this site - when i bought mine there were many who liked the gunting - searching for "kinetic kool-aid" may get a few search results

as for the dodo - its ugly - but it is very comfortable, and is a heck of a cutter - that reverse S blade shape works really well for many cutting jobs.

You can find videos in YouTube from Bram with the gunting and with his newer model. The techniques remain the same because of the similar design. The kinetic opening with the ramp will definitely cut when opening especially if you're grappling and use it on a person's torso. If you open on a smaller target say the wrist it my not cut on opening. You can also bump and pull the knife away horizontally and it will usually clear the target without cutting. Might need a slight flick to achieve lock out but this blade flicks open easy without use of the thumb hole. It can be used in many grips for pain compliance as well if that's your goal. Best way to really get a feel for it is to practice and i highly recommend you would do this with a trainer. Bram also shows demos with the dimples on how to index the knife while locking and trapping with it.

OK, I'll bite, without deferring to Google here, what the heck does "CRIMPT" stand for? :) Sorry, if it's a stupid question!

And BTW, some crazy-looking Spydies there Eli! You'll have to start a traveling museum collection :D!

Thanks everyone. Yes, I believe that the S30V PE Guntings are some pretty rare birds. :)

My bad--it should actually be CRMIPT, which means Close Range Medium ImPact Tool. There is more information about it on Bram Frank's website.
