Re: sharpmaker any good?
Meh, it's alright.
Just kidding. It is great for maintaining edges but a little slow at reprofiling unless you get the diamond rods. With the diamond rods it is a great and very intuitive system. I use one all the time. As far as sharpening difficult steels it is more than adequate. I sharpen S110V and 204P on mine with no issues. I would pick one up and give it a try.

I'm a pretty good freehand sharpener but keep a sm set up in the kitchen all the time. So quick and easy to keep a hairsplitting edge on all my knives with the sharpmaker. Best sharpening tool I own! I would second what Darby said and definitely recommend getting the diamond rods too.
Re: sharpmaker any good?
okey then im also buying the diamond rods. what is the CBN Cubic Boron Nitride tubes for then?

Diamond and CBN rods will essentially function the same by all accounts. You are going to get a lot of enjoyment out of this tool. I highly recommend watching the videos that come with it. You can also look them up on youtube while you are waiting for delivery.
Re: sharpmaker any good?

Re: sharpmaker any good?
As far as we can tell they are basically the same. They are the same grit and we still don't really know which lasts longer because the CBN rods are so new. I guess it is really a coin toss at this point.
Interesting fact is that Spyderco made sharpeners before they ever made knives and on a similar note I bought a Sharpmaker before ever buying a Spyderco knife.
Like Lance said, watch the video and make sure to understand the bevel and microbevel concept and sharpening gets much easier. Once you have that figured out the rest is just practice and establishing muscle memory. Enjoy!

Re: sharpmaker any good?
It is set up for 15/20 degrees per side so you are correct that 15 degrees is the lowest setting.

Re: sharpmaker any good?
15 dps is the lowest setting but its really easy to change that. Just take a pencil (or something slightly larger or smaller in diameter) and tape or rubber band it to the exact center of the base. Then you can "seesaw" the base back and forth as you alternate sides. You can achieve any angle you want depending on the size of the object you put under the middle of the base.mrbushido wrote:and 15 degrees each side is the lowest ?
The above technique will work just fine, but honestly, I find most all my sharpening needs are well covered by the 15 and 20 dps settings. I sharpen almost all my knives at 30 degrees and then keep a microlevel on most of them at 40. (inclusive)

Re: sharpmaker any good?
They are the same grit as far as I can tell, I have both sets. They cut the same, leave the same finish. Assuming there is no fracture of the bond, the diamond would be expected to last longer however both of them wear very slow. Most people reduce the lifetime of the rods by damage vs slow wear. Use a lubricant, light force.mrbushido wrote:okey and any know the difference between cbn and diamond rods?
The diamond/CBN rods are ~400 grit so yes, but it is slower than using an x-coarse stone which can be obtained readily down to the ~100 grit levels.can i thin a knife on this system?

Re: sharpmaker any good?
I was fighting with this scenario the other night. When you say the middle of the base, do you mean the absolute middle of the base or the middle of the two rods you are using at the moment. If the pencil was at the middle of the base, wouldn't the angles be different from one rod to the other?Surfingringo wrote:15 dps is the lowest setting but its really easy to change that. Re: sharpmaker any good?
No, middle of the base. Think about it this way...when you tilt the base one way, the entire base will be resting at an adjusted (lets say 5 degree) angle. So any thing sticking vertically out of the base (at any position on the base) will also change by five degrees. Tilt the base the same amount in the other direction and the rod will lean 5 degrees in that direction. Make sense? Its a bit confusing to the mind because the rods happen to be on one side. Think of it only in terms of the angle of the base and it makes more sense.Liquid Cobra wrote:I was fighting with this scenario the other night. okey thanks guys. so you will recomend to use water or oil to lubricate while sharpening?
Re: sharpmaker any good?
There is a thread that our good brother Cliff Stamp had going on CBN rods about two months ago if I remember correctly>> should be easy for you to look up. They chatted at length about the new CBN rods and I'm certain they probably answered any questions you would have on that previous thread. Also the thread had several hits on it and the disscussion ran for quite a while so I do encourage you to check out what they said.mrbushido wrote:waht is better than the cbn or diamond? cant afford both hehe
My jury is still out on the CBN rods at this time. I just got a few extra dollars and I"m torn between getting the CBN rods or snagging a couple of Spyders I've been wanting for some time. But so far I'm not totally sold that there would be major advantages to owning and using them. And I usually buy new sharpening equipment most of the time before I even buy new knives.
But do check out Cliff's thread on the CBN rods because there is some good information on it.
