I can't decide on my next Spyderco

#1

Post by Lefty923 »

I'm looking for new Spydie and I can't decide. I don't want to buy something redundant, if there is such a thing. What I currently own of Spyderco is.

Para 2
Delica 4 x2
Tenacious
Dragonfly

I'm looking for an EDC, but aren't they all. I love the Para 2 but it's a bit large to carry at work (sheeple). My usual carry is the Delica. I love the blade shape of the Dragonfly but it's a little small for some applications IMHO. The Tenacious is a bit heavy. I pretty much lean towards the Sage 1 or the Native 5 G10, I just can't take the jump. Thoughts?

You need a flipper. Southard or domino.

Take a hard look at the Caly3 and the Chaparral. These are useful and much easier to carry than the Sage or Native. The Caly3 is pretty nice, I must say. I have both and both are good choices, but the Chaparral is more a gentleman's knife and thin where the Caly3 can be a gentleman's knife or a work knife.

I'd highly recommend a Caly 3 or Caly 3.5. You should check them out.

If you find the tenacious heavy you'll probably feel the same way with the N5

I guess I would say Sage 1 with the Native 5 FRN a close second. The Native 5 FRN is less money and perhaps a better value (I have both). The Sage 1 has classy feel to it. The carbon fiber is just pleasant to hold. The open and close is sooo smooth. The Native 5 more grippy with the volcano grip for serious work. The Native 5 has a very sure click lock back, and although stiffer can be flicked open with your thumb. And I think the slightly smaller Native 5 is the sweet spot for EDC size. I say it's close between those two.

You know that Spyderco is coming out with an S110V version of the Native 5 in blue FRN right?

Caly 3.5 is in my pocket these days, Native 5 110v is a great little knife too.

You ought to get a Centofante with the VG10 Stainless Steel blade and FRN handle. It is beautiful and well-made and an excellent-knife. Look at it this way: By purchasing this folder, you are 1 Helping to support the best knife company that has ever existed, Spyderco, 2 honoring the memory of Frank Centofante, one of the greatest knife makers who ever lived, and 3 Getting yourself an exquisite, superb, all-around excellent super-quality cutting tool.

I was just in the same boat as you and couldn't decide, I finally went with the N5 FRN. At only 2.45oz for an EDC its hard to go wrong.

I know it might sound odd, but this is my new favorite EDC! Image

I find the size and blade shape works great for the vast majority of my normal everyday cutting tasks. I have been carrying it for several weeks and am yet to run into anything I couldn't do with it and it absolutely excels at most of my tasks. It is a box opening MACHINE! :)

If thats too different for you then I would agree with others who suggested caly 3, Chaparral, and Native.

Dude, the Caly3.5 has been recently discontinued so if you can still find one I would jump on it. It is a great knife.

I voted Sage on your poll.

Thanks for all that had input. I opted for the Sage 1. It finally came today. WOW, what a great looking/feeling knife. My EDC has been a Delica 4 for a few awhile now. Nice to see it's not much bigger, but a little beefier. I'd be curious to see a FRN version of the Sage. But I'm good for now.

Sage 1 over N5 FRN? I'm guessing you either prefer liner locks or it's an aesthetic choice for you. Because as far as N5 FRN as compared to Sage 1:

* Much cheaper
* Much lighter
* Better steel
* Same blade length
* Shorter closed length
* Lanyard hole

But N5 LW is not for hard use, of course.
"We have more metal parts fail than plastic parts. Modern plastics are tough. 'Feeling cheap' may be a false perception and one might need more education. We rarely get a FRN knife back with handle problems and we have millions of them out in daily use. " --Sal Glesser
