Disappointed with Worker

#1

Post by remnar »

I've been waiting all week to receive this knife and it would probably be one of my favorites if it were not for this:

Image

I have never returned a knife before, but I don't think I can accept a knife as expensive as this one with such a bad grind that it looks like the blade is bent. :(

This doesn't hurt the cutting ability of your knife. Too many people think that if the knife is off center , it affects its performance or use . I have hand made knives from Shosui Takeda that are off center. If you are opening with the finger hole, It actually will center itself down the road. Knives that are centered, will be off center during the course of use.

It's not unreasonable for you to expect the blade to be centered. If it bugs you return it to the dealer, if you can live with it all the power to you. I bought a NIB SB Caly 3.5 with a warped blade. It bugged me a lot but decided to live with it. Now I don't even notice it really since its a user.
Most recently acquired: Military 2, Paramilitary 2 Tanto x2, YoJUMBO, Swayback, Siren, DLC Yojimbo 2, Native Chief, Shaman S90V, Para 3 LW, Ikuchi, UKPK, Smock, SUBVERT, Amalgam, Para 3 CTS-XHP, Kapara, Paramilitary 2 M390

You guys realize it is not off center, the grind is asymmetrical, right?

It's really hard to tell on that fuzzy pic. Is the blade simply off center or is the grind WAY off on the spine? That swedge grind looks like a mess but like I said, hard to tell from this pic.

I think the swedge grind is way messed up.

I disagree. It may not affect cutting ability, but it certainly affects opening and closing function. I read an article by Michael Janich once where he said, unequivocally, that if your knife blade is off center in the handle, you should buy a better knife. I would definitely send it back.
A sharp knife is a pleasure to carry. Five or six sharp knives are an even greater pleasure.

Sorry to hear of your disappointment. I wanted to compare your photos to my example of this knife and mine looks exactly like yours. I think it is more than likely an asymmetrical swedge grind as the flats of the saber are evenly spaced from the liners on each side. If you are dissatisfied I say send it back to your dealer, but I'd just use it if I were in your shoes. YMMV

I too have just received a new Worker. Mine however appears perfect on ever way. I really like this knife. If the abnormalities of your knife truly bother you, return it for a replacement. I can't imagine you would have trouble with a replacement. It happens but is correctable.

I would send it back for exchange. The price should reflect build quality in my opinion.
I have quit purchasing Seki made knives lately unless I can inspect the knife prior to purchase.
In my experience they have had the most fit and finish issues of all the Spyderco factories.
To me the Taichung models are light years ahead in the fit and finish to the Seki models.

I passed on the worker due to price. Still thinking about it but am undecided. Considering what they are asking for it I would exchange it with your dealer for a better one. Really depends on your standards and if it is destined to be a user or not.

It's not too much to expect Spyderco to deliver a knife that is better crafted than that.

That's not acceptable for a knife made in Seki-City costing as much as it does. Especially with only VG-10 steel.

I just checked my Worker sprint, and I never noticed before, but mine is slightly off much like the OP's. On mine, the blade seems to be perfectly centered between the liners, but the hollow ground portion is slightly asymmetrical along the whole length of the blade. It becomes most obvious at the tip where it leans noticeably to one side. So far it hasn't affected function at all, and I'm happy with mine.

If it bothers you, return it for an exchange. But make sure you ask the dealer to inspect the replacement carefully, because there are others like this too.

Mine is also offset slightly to that side, but not even half that, and I'm happy with is as a user. That one is pretty far gone though and I'd exchange it for another.

Hello Sal,

Thank you for your response. Would you suggest that I contact the vendor first or should I contact Spyderco CS directly. I really do love everything about this knife, just not the extremely uneven grind.

Send it to spyderco W&R along with a letter describing your issues with the knife and why you feel it is unacceptable. They'll take care of you.
