Q Identity

Post by Rawd »

I have two Q's that I have no info on. Can any of you other Spydeyfans help out? If the images don't load, one is a Jolly Roger, and the other looks like a Salmon (fish). Thanks for any help.

The one with the fish is called the "Chinook" model. It was made especially for Chinook, who posts here. It was recently stolen in a bizarre string of Spydie-robberies in the pacific northeast. So you need to return that one to him right away. If you send it to me, I'll re-mail it to him; nice guy that I am...:D

Nice pictures!!!

We have a gentleman here at Spyderco that is doing some extensive research on all the "Q"'s that were produced. He is not sure about the Skull and Cross Bones right now, but he promises to find out more. For the Salmon model...he stated that there were a 600 limited run for a company called Quest Sales & Marketing (field reps for Spyderco Northwest region) for a Mr. Fred Meyer. Hope this helps, as soon as I hear more, I'll let you know!!

Rawd...
You bypass that 'numb'rd middleman and we might just make a trade fer that fishy Q you got there.

I am about 25 miles from a Freddie Meyer, (local equivalent to Walmart/JCPenny/Sears) and they definitely don't have one of those in their sporting goods section.

Here is another fish Q, butt not like your King Salmon.

TQ,
Thanks for the info on the salmon. And Chinook the pix on yours says 98Kona. Is that the origin of that Q? I thought the Kona 98 Q has a red handle.
Also TQ is there anyway to get the research published that has been obtained? I'm curious about ones that I haven't seen or heard of.

boxer93,
I believe the information will be given out eventually. How/When is the question. I myself did not realize how many different versions that were actually produced. It is my understanding that there were "Q"'s that were made as samples and later never fully produced in quantity. You can understand how these could be very valuable.
Back to the issue of publishing the results...I will have to get back to you on this. I myself am happy to fill you in on any information that I may have access to. As always, research takes time. And until it gets to the point of finishing, I can not say for now what will happen to the information.

boxer93...
That was how the guy that posted it called it I believe. The only colored handle Q's I've seen were the solid blade ones, or the grey 25th anniversary Blade magazine one.

Chinook,
I'll try attaching a photo I got from another forumite. It's clear but dark. I don't have this one but I have managed to aquire a few unique ones.

Edit: I had to crop the image a lot too, but you should get an idea of the handle and blade.

The "Q" knife was trhe first bug bite I suffered. Tip Of the Day: Those that have an REI store nearby might check the knife counter for the "REI Q" Have the folks look way in the back of the shelf for old stock. I did and I nabbed two that way...

Greetings~
I'm not positive, but I've heard tell that the "jolly rancher" (skull & crossbones) model Q was made for Soldier of Fortune magazine. The Kona models were made for our Ironstone store in Kona, Hawaii. The big fish is a marlin and was made in 1998. The next year we had a Q model with a volcano w/lava flow.
Blade magazine had some made up with "Blade" in the blade, Moteng sold the geometric pattern, SFO had some with the American flag as well as some especially made for PRCA with a cowboy riding a bucking bronc.

Aloha~

Boxer, I'm about 15 min. from the REading, Ma. Store... It's in the middle of being renovated- It looks like a bomb hit it. I know a couple folks there- I'll check this week and let you know what I find.

Thanks Fozzy,
Maybe You'll have better luck. I was there this weekend and the counter guy said no. He even made the comment that you don't see any co's there. Not sure why they don't sell them anymore. If your sources dig any up let me know.
Thanks

lokelani,
I should have read your reply better. I started searching for Ironstone in Kona, maybe they still had 1 or 2 on a shelf. But only to find out that they closed in 2000. Then the interesting twist in searching was Ironstone brought me back to you . Now only if you brought back a suitcase full of Q's
