Multi Tools With Pocket Clip

#1

Post by 3rdGenRigger »

As the thread title indicates I want to hear some opinions on pocket friendly multi tools. Pocket friendly by definition in my mind is a tool with a clip that can ride in my pocket above such things as my keys or phone which reside in the bottom of my pockets. If I have a knife (Keychain folders aside) I won't carry it if it doesn't have a pocket clip and doesn't ride unobtrusively in my pocket. Same applies to flashlights, and multi tools (At least for me...I'll be switching from my Fisher Bullet to a pen with a pocket clip when I find one I like). Anyways, back on topic...as much as I like my Byrdwrench, and despite the fact that it has a pocket clip, I find it too bulky to justify carrying it on a daily basis. As such it mainly resides in the glove compartment of my truck for unexpected circumstances and I've been glad to have it there at least a few times. I've found few multi tools that are small enough, but recently purchased a Leatherman Skeletool CX. It has roughly the same dimensions of a Native 5 when closed up, albeit a little thicker and heavier, but it carries well and the clip settles it fairly deep. It doesn't have a lot of different attachments, and I definitely need to buy a bit kit for it, but it has all the essential things I'd want on top of a handy Spyderco in the opposing pocket. Price wise it's fairly good, and the CX model has a 154CM plain edge blade instead of the normal Skeletool which has a combo edge 420HC blade, which I vastly prefer, and I like the appearance of the black coating more. Here's a few comparison shots with a Native 5 for comparison. What multi tool does everyone here pair opposite to a Spyderco?

I purchased this little animal recently to replace a bigger clipped fullsize MT that now rides in my EDC bag.

I have a Leatherman Skeletool that I like, and for some people it could replace carrying a separate knife. I don't carry it much because I have too many nice knives that I want to carry.

I also have a Leatherman Charge and I think it is a great tool. It could also replace a normal folding knife but in my case I carry it in addition to a folding knife. The Leatherman Wave is very similar to the Charge and also available with a pocket clip.

I am truly obsessed with leathermans and collect and carry many. I am trying to accumulate one of each model they have ever made. I am sure I will be working on this for some time. As far as models with pocket clips go, I really like the Freestyle for something small and light. I also have the pocket clip attachment for my wave and surge. I do not have a charge, but they are great models and also accept the pocket clip attachments.

I have not bothered with any of the CX models yet since I always carry a main blade and mostly use the multi for the tools, not the knife. Since all of my main carry blades are PE I actually don't mind a combo edge on a Multitool even though I avoid CE blades on other knives.

I found that I couldn't settle on a multi that had a tool layout that I liked that came with a clip so I got a Victorinox Spirit and ordered a ClipDraw clip for it. They attach via a strong strip of 3M adhesive tape and are strong enough to clip a handgun to your belt so they're more than enough for a multi. They're a little high profile off the tool which bothers me but it's the best compromise I've found and the only way I've been satisfied enough to carry a multi everyday.
