Byrd Meadowlark 2 FRN - follow up review

#1

Post by Dafke »

Hi,

I received a Byrd Meadowlark 2 as a birthday present last Friday (thanks brother!).
It differs from the other (higher end) Spyderco's in my modest collection, but it is a fine knife.
As I can not find many user reviews on the Meadowlark 2, I will try to write one myself and follow up on it in the next couple of months. This knife will see some good use so let's find out how it holds up!

31/1: My first impressions (unboxing):
* I will need to get used to the comet shaped opening hole (it functions perfectly but looks a bit odd to me).
* The knife feels light but solid thanks to the steel liners.
* FRN pattern is grippy and feels good in hand.
* Zero bladeplay and a good opening and closing action, I'm impressed!
* Lock seems strong (opens with a loud 'click').
* Full flat ground blade with nice grind lines.
* Factory edge was bad: uneven (20° on one side, 25° on the other) and not so sharp (I'm spoiled by Spyderco).

4/2: Taking a closer look and putting my own edge on it:
* Action remains smooth after a couple days of use. No sign of bladeplay.
* I tried to move the pocket clip for tip down carry because I think the knife sits a bit deeper in the pocket that way, but the pocket clip screws strip very easily. I think I'll take no risks and leave it tip down.
* I used my Lansky sharpener to reprofile the knife to just under 20° per side and I added a microbevel with the Sharpmaker (40° setting). The knife takes a shaving sharp edge easily and cuts very well thanks to the thin FFG blade.

I will put the knife to use the next few weeks and report back on the edge holdig.

Regards,
D.

I also own one of these and enjoy it very much. I am curious to see your impression of the knife as you use it more. I know you mentioned owning other Spydercos, what else are you used to carrying?

Thanks for taking the time to do a review for us.

Hello Mike,

I'm not a collector, so all my knives get used from time to time. But to be honest, the most expensive ones do see the lightest use. :o

At the moment, my Spydies are: Native 5, Sage 1, PM2, Gayle Bradley, Chaparral 1, Delica 4 ZDP, Caly 3.5 and a Tenacious.

Have you used your Meadowlark? How does it hold up for you?

Regards,
Davy
