I want a Jandura

#1

Post by twinboysdad »

Talked to SSM today and no plans to grind any before Christmas :( . I was going to make that my gift, but looks like it will have to wait. They did say there are plans to do a saber, and grey and black FFG run. I did discuss with them possibly doing a few FFG's in either blue or the hospital scrubs green so as to "tool" up the appearance. Orange was a no go as too close to red and training knife color, which I can totally understand. I did find out that the saber inertia opens much better than the FFG, per SSM. Anybody got one and want to elaborate? As crazy as this sounds, I would probably send MJ my SB E4 to mod if that could happen

Lol, I didn't understand anything from the title to the last sentence. Hope he explains though because once I know what he's talking about I might realize it's something I absolutely need! :D .

Its a modified endura carried by Mr Janich. Jimping is ground off and the blade is ground to 3.5 inches with a wharncliffe style tip.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Sounds like he talking about Stay Safe Media and Michael Janich's custom Endura's where he shortens/grinds the blade down to comply with laws requiring a 3.5" blade and under.

He does the same to Delica's that he plans to carry when in Chicago grinding them down to 2.5" and from what I understand, there are plans in the works for next year for there to be a run of Spyderco manufactured 2.5" Delica's made for a gun company.

That does look good but it doesn't look like something that would be that difficult to do yourself with a Dremel. Of course the picture probably doesn't show the beauty you would see if it was in your hand. I do like the idea though. If you like a full hand filling handle and need a shorter blade for legal or any other reasons this is the ticket I think. I like it. Also getting one of Mr. Janich's knives would make a great collector's item I bet. I bet if it was in your display case lots of people would say "hey, look at this one". :)

Sometimes we need a hand filling handle and a smaller blade. When hanging sheetrock for example.

If I was doing one myself, I would use a belt sander like a 1X30 or 1X42. Use an 80-grit belt and grind a little, dip in water, and repeat. Keep the blade cool and don’t let its color change. Finish with a 240-grit belt.

Those were the recommendations an expert on the subject gave me.

Im going to have to second what jackknife said. Unless I missing something, that looks like a super easy grind job. Is it just the spine that is reground? You can do that with a grinder or heavy grit sander in 5 minutes. Finish with a block and sandpaper and it will be exactly like mj's minus the signature.

The jimping is also ground off, and the spine rounded. The action is also lapped and smoothed. I have one, it's a nicely done mod.

Dark picture for a dark knife :)

Image

I picked one up recently but I'm still figuring out if I will keep it, like Holland its not really my cup of tea. I do love the rounded spine an would like to see this on more Spyderco blades :)
