Any guess what steel this Gerber uses?

I'm in love with this knife...

Just curious what steel they're using these days. I've had quite a few Gerber Ridge's, which are pretty cool little knives especially for the price. This one seems to have everything that the Ridge has going for it, along with that finger hole for extra grip. The older Ridge used AUS6, I wonder what this uses? All it needs is a pointier wharnie blade.

I like to call it good-enough steel. :D

From posts on BF/other forums, it looks like their mystery steel is often 440A of 420J2 and their Chinese equivalents for their Chinese made knives.

I believe that SanRenMu used to make this knife. But there are a couple by Ganzo that look very very similar so it might have been that factory. http://www.exduct.com/ganzo-g709-g10-ha ... knife.html

you could also email that site with the picture and ask. They are pretty knowledgeable about Chinese made knives and could probably get you the non Gerber version if it is still in production.

If either of those where wharnie blades, I'd be all over them.

That looks like a very useful knife. You mentioned something about the tip being pointier. The tip it has now looks to be a good hard work blade for cutting carpet or something like that. A splinter picker tip would be too weak. I know nothing about that knife. Does it fold? I had a Gerber once that had 440A steel. When you use the knife and it dulls FAST it may be 440A. That is what the knife I had would do. That was several years ago and I know nothing about their heat treating and all that. No matter what the steel it looks like a pretty cool tool.

Anymore it seems like Gerber is not generally telling what steel they use. I would guess its a low grade chinese steel like 3Cr13, which I believe is basically 420J2.

It would be a quick mod to make that a Wharnie.

The last couple of years, almost all Gerbers are using 7Cr17 and 5Cr15.

I got a Gerber mini-swagger (non A/O) last week and the back of the clamshell pack says 7CR17MOV. The factory edge was sharp, so to speak, and held an edge O.K., but I had to seriously thin the edge down when it came time to sharpen it, as most makers give the consumer the thickest edge from the factory to withstand abuse from mostly "non-edge-u-cated" knife users.
