Black Coated Blade

#1

Post by Wolverine666 »

I've never owned a black coated blade (from any knife brand). I was always afraid the coating would scratch easily or rub off.

But now I've set my sites on the all black Manix2. I'm not sure how durable and scratch resistant the black blade coating is but I want this knife regardless.

So does anyone have first hand experience with black blades from Spyderco? Pros ? Cons ?

I've got a black bladed ParaMilitary 2.

Honestly, the only difference I've noticed is that it's black. I've only cut pretty normal stuff with it (cardboard, rope, etc), but so far there have been no issues with the coating.

I have a few DLC coated blades, including the Manix 2 XL. I haven't used them terribly rough, but what I've noticed it that when I do get marks on the blade, it is actually stuff that I have cut that is *on* the blade, and cleans off. The black coating itself is quite durable.

The link doesn't seem to work.

But so far it seems the black blade coating seems to be very durable and well-liked. I want one.

The link went to search results.

But its very simple, dump in the searchbox here on top of the forum the word: coating

Then you get tons of informative topics where people discuss coatings.

Its one of the many subjects that is already chewed out.

Or you can just ask, like you did. The DLC coating is outstanding. I never wanted a coated blade (for the exact reasons you mentioned), but when I was shopping for a pm2 that's all I could find. I bought one with some reluctance, and have been extremely impressed! Very nice looking and extremely durable! Give it a shot. You'll like it.

I can write many things whats wrong with that.

Not mean to be rude or pointing my finger, dont get me wrong but . . .

Here are a few things to think about and to get insight why. ;)

-Searching before posting your question should be the first thing you do. Its a very well-known and proven strategy for finding info.
Especially when the question you have is a very general one, the chance will be high to find topics already. Most questions are not really unique btw.

-The TS has almost 500 posts, then I assume he knows to find the searchbox.

-When each time a new topic is opened for an already covered subject. again and again and again, people lose there appetite to post and share info, only some newbies and diehards will post, high change not all information will be written anymore. So quite possible the final information will become poorer and poorer each time. Aka incomplete.

-You also make that people with more than average knowledge give up this forum completely, because why should you write while everybody systematically ignores what you shared? Result is loss of qualityposters.

-Its in general an unintelligent way of dealing with information.

-Ignoring former topics and the TIME and ENERGY people have put in before, to help others with information, is rude and disrespectful.

-Boring for other members to be confronted with again another topic of the same subject. . .

-Splitted information over more than one topic while the subject is the same.

-etc etc etc

Then to my surprise I found a topic about exactly this subject made by the TS from 02-27-2012 called: Black Blades  Again I dont want to be rude but informative, maybe the TS has a kind of memory prob?

Last but not least
Seems that the DLC is not exactly the same Always, you can find pics here on the forum. Texture can differ, colorshade too and also different steels can give different DLC looks.

Interesting thing to have in mind is that a Manix has not only a DLC blade but also other parts are blackened (liners etc) I have no idea how solid that black is. ??

Whew, thanks for pointing all that out. Most of us wouldn't have taken the time to make such a thoughtful and detailed argument about cluttering up the boards with irrelevant nonsense. We're lucky to have you around to share your experience and wisdom.

DLC is extremely tough.

I'm trying to compare it to something but you would almost swear that the blade is made out of the black material because it doesn't really wear down.

Pros: Looks awesome. Even if it does start to wear off (unlikely) it gives the blade a lot of character. Being able to embrace the battle scars gives me a sense of pride.

Cons: If you are into shiny brand new looking knives, after extremely hard use the DLC could get scratched up.

If everyone were to use the search function like you suggest, there would be almost nothing to discuss because 99.9% things have been talked about already.

I think instead of trying to be imperious you could have simply given the man an answer.... thus creating a new discussion in October 2013 with new opinions and giving the forum a sense of community.

To hammer down my point... you are contradicting your self talking about "TIME and ENERGY" and it would have been way easier just to tell Wolverine666 what you thought about DLC/black coating instead of making three posts about using the search function.

In an alternative scenario, what you are doing is telling a person who asked you what time it is was that its "time to get a watch" .... you could have easily told the person the time instead of telling them where to get it.

I think your link with the search bar was rude and disrespectful.... I personally clicked on it thinking that you were being a decent member providing helpful information but it didn't shop up with any information but made it confusing --- instead what you did was insulted someones intelligence. It simply isn't contributing to the Spyderco community.

DLC stands for "diamond like coating".

Without drafting up a condescending tirade I can say that based on reputation and acronym alone it should be very robust. :)

Honestly, great question. It's quite relevant.

I have a black Para 2, a Military and a Manix 2. The DLC looks a little different on the Manix than the other two (not that, that is really relevant to the post) they have all held up well. I have put a couple of scratches on the Military but they aren't really noticeable. DLC does drag a bit more in certain materials than un-coated steel.

It is nonsense that you could not start new posts because all is already covered. You totally missing the point.

You always have people that dont know how to interpretate although I explain things well.
People react to my post as it is nonsense but I talk about FACTS.
Nothing difficult here to understand.

Too many topics are here covering the same subjects, that has a negative effect on a forum in more than one way. I urge you to think about it. You need to interpretate my post as help for the forum. Its a product of vision.
Also my post was in first written to surfinggringo who has the same habit not to search before posting. Which I told him recently. Which you can follow when you look to former postings in his history profile ofcourse.

But how foolish you all are (sorry to say) is in the fact that I tell you here that the TS has opened in the past a topic with exactly the SAME SUBJECT. I even gave a date and link and topic title. He was already updated about the subject then.

Why you ignore that????????? geeze

More of the same>>

You all are running around in circles but are not aware of it.
When I tell you, you ignore the facts.

Im not out on senseless discussions, I wrote enough in this topic to make the right point.
Wish you all luck to find some wisdom, you can use it . . . .

Thanks for keeping us on the right track. If it wasn't for your suggestion this forum would be over run with valuable discussion and information. Think about it...a search on any given topic would pull up MULTIPLE threads...we can't let that happen. Thanks again for your tireless effort to control this flow of information.

Ignore filter? Never had to ignore someone but unfortunately right now seems to be the best time to do it.

Posting 4 posts with a 2 page essay and pictures about using the search bar to "save time and effort" to prove a point seems extremely contradicting.
