What Lock Type Is Predominate in Your Spydie Collection?

#1

Post by Rwb1500 »

I own 22 Spyderco knives. One fixed blade, one compression lock, one slip joint, one caged ball bearing, one liner lock, and one Phantom lock. The rest (sixteen) are all lock backs. Am I the only one with this disparity?

I suppose there might be more lock backs in the line up then anything else.

How does your collection break down?

Most of Spyderco's models use lockbacks, so I doubt you're alone. My collection has one comp lock, and that's it.

Lockback's for me as well. It's ambi and usually makes a knife thinner so it carries nicer in the pocket. Win-win. ;)

My Spyderco breakdown

CBBL = 7
Comp lock = 4
Liner lock = 8
RIL = 2
FB (Mules inc.) = 12
Mid lock = 30
Slipjoint = 2

Obviously my collection has a slight skew as well.

I think this is all:

17- lockbacks
1 - CBBL
1 - Comp Lock
2 - Slipjoint
1 - FB

So yeah. I have more lockbacks than anything. I keep coming back to them even though I try other locks out. My Endura's get carried almost every week.

Lockbacks - 8

Linerlocks - 3

Comp Locks - 3

Phantom Lock - 1

Fixed Blade - 8

I like compression locks the best, but they tend to be pricier and less common than backlocks.

Liner locks - 7
Back locks -4

And I wouldn't go near a back lock before I tried the Matriach , liners are my preference .
I figure anything enough to break one needs a fixed blade .

Interesting question. Only counting Spyderco:

Compression = 3, Paramilitary, Para 2, Yojimbo 2
CBBL = 2, M4 Manix 2, DLC Manix 2
Liner = 2, Rock Lobster, Vallotton
Mid = 10, 2 Ladybugs, Native lightweight, Forum Native, Stretch II, Ulize, Caly 3 ZDP, Centofante 4, H1 Dragonfly, pink Native

The interesting thing is, the mid lock is my least favorite of them all. It's not that it's a bad lock, it's just not as exciting to me as the compression and CBBL are. I think what this shows more than lock preference is, which lock saturates the catalog more so than the next. There are just simply more models available in mid lock than compression or CBBL.

Not totally sure of the numbers, but it's mostly lockbacks. Second place is slip-joints.

Same here. Mid locks dominate my modest Spyderco collection simply because so many models use them. I love the compression lock, but lots of worthwhile knives are mid lock only. It is a solid performer, no complaints.

Three lockbacks, and a compression lock for me. I like the comp the best.

I'd say 80% or more of my Spydercos are midlocks. Next largest group of them would be the spring locks, After that would come liner locks, then slip-its/slipjoints, then at least one example of every other lock Spyderco has used.
